I just wanted to know if you dig the beater in the head or not? If you don't what technique are you using ? (heel up or heel down).

Heel Up.  Sometimes heel down.  As for technique, i guess its just the natural bounce back, which after i hit the beater rests about an inch or two from the head.  All the force goes into the stroke and than the foot is relaxed on the rests.

I'm interested to see what everyone has to say about this.  I'm new and I have a really hard time NOT leaving the beater against the head.

I'm one of those people who kinda bounces when they walk (short hamstrings?) so when I sit at the kit, and rest my foot on the bass pedal, it 'automatically' puts the beater against the head.  I have to actively pivot my ankle to bring my foot 'up' if I want the beater to stay off the head between beats.

From a playing standpoint, regardless, it feels more 'natural' to me to leave the beater against the head, and play heel down.

I do my best to keep the beater off the head so as not to change the natural sound of the bass. I like the solid thump without deadining it with the beater. I play a lot barefooted(when I wear my Burks.) and the right beater hits my foot a lot, the left one not so much.

Sometimes heel up, sometimes down.  The way I adjust my pedal (which means absolutely nothing) is to put my foot on the pedal and the normal foot pressure should move the beater half way to the head.  I have no idea where, when, or why I started doing it this way but it works for me.  I think it was back in the Ghost pedal days.  Boy do I miss that pedal......

I play mostly heel down and I don't dig into the drum.

I've only been playing about 8 months and I've already noticed that my foot technique is changing alot. When I first started playing I always dug the beater into the head. I think it was more of a security thing because i felt like it kept me from letting it bounce and hitting more than I wanted to.

Now that I'm getting more control over my feet and a bit more confident I've found that I let it bounce back unless I intentionally dig because it sounds much fuller to allow the hit to resonate.

I let the beater bounce off the head. I play heel up, but not in the way that you have to lift your whole foot to play the kick. My heel is pretty close to the pedal, but it doesn't touch it.
