I've heard that keeping your wallet in your back pocket can lead to back problems in some people since it means you're always sitting on an uneven surface. It sounds like a wife's tale to me, but I thought I'd ask anyway if anybody's ever heard of this being an actual problem. Does anybody know for sure one way or the other?

i heard its called truckers' butt or back.  when i was consulting, i had to drive 2 hours daily, and the same happend to me.  my wallet was in my left back pocket, and the pain would go from my butt, all the way down my leg.

Hanging a purse on the shoulder causes strain & pain too.

When I'm playing, I'll usually take my wallet out of my back pocket and also take off my wrist watch.  For some reason, the watch really bugs me when I'm playing.

YES! It's true.

That's why I've used a money clip for almost 2 decades. The trouble with that, however, is that I never have any money, so the clip just rattles against the coins and car keys in my pocket. This can be very distracting ... especially in the recording studio. So, if you play music for a living AND want to reduce spine and back troubles caused by wallets ... be sure to remove the money clip before you sit down to play.  

FYI ... if you have a wallet the size of George Costanza's ... switching to a money clip probably won't do you much good now ... it's too late.

I have a small wallet, just big enough for those few cards, and I keep it in the front pants pocket ... but usually carry it in a jacket pocket ... moving it to my stickbag when I play.

You really only need your Drivers License and one credit card ... and that's not very thick.  

I had back pain, the chiropractor said my wallet was too heavy so he lightened it for me!

That was a great episode!  G.C.s wallet was as thick as a cinder block....

I've always had mine attached to a chain since the late '60's (when I got my 1st wallet). And in the stick-bag it goes, along w/my rings and watch, when playing.

Weren't you listening? I said it was on a chain didn't I  ?!!?!  

The wallet is chained to me and remains so, even when in the stickbag.

Sounds about right to me...  I had assumed that I was simply twisting my back which caused the pain. Posture is sooo crucial for the back. I used to sit on my leg as well... Right leg under my left leg... BAD BAD BAD....  Breaking that habit has been a challenge.

Try it out... You'll notice a difference...

Luckily this hasn't happened to me as of yet ( knock on wood...where did my snare go,lol ) Generally when i'm home I leave my wallet in my room,no need to have it if i'm not going out. And at shows I place it in my stick bag while playing along with my glasses,ear plug case,etc... This way there is no risk of it falling out while i'm taking things off stage and such.

good gorsh; i could never carry a wallet in my pocket. that thing is forever bulging with dollar bills, coins, atm receipts, coupons i never use, etc. and even though i don't have many credit cards, i still have my med insurance card, dental insurance card, costco card, license, metrocards, phone card, library card, blah, blah, blah.

i must find a way to lighten my load. carrying my pocketbook makes me feel like a donkey -- literally. there's books, magazines, the wallet, umbrella, spare shoes, makeup, meds, perfume, eyeglass case, sunglass case, blah, blah, blah.

i'm gonna be a hunched-over bitty by the time i'm fiddy.
