ok. hypothetical situation. youve got two bands. they are different bands, that cover different areas of your interests. you love them both, musically and personality wise they are both a match. you dont want to give up one for the other but the time commitment to doing them both is a bit much. how do you decide?

Sheesh, we should all have this problem Hard one to figure, I'd try to stay with both.

The techniques, though they play an important role in the early stage, should not be too restrictive, complex or mechanical. If we cling to them, we will become bound by their limitation. Any technique, however worthy and desirable, becomes a disease when the mind is obsessed with it.

"...different bands, that cover different areas of your interests."
Usually there's one that's slightly stronger. I.e., my musical tastes are all over the place, but there's always something that's just more "there" but I convince myself that the other is better for extraneous reasons.
As Darth Vader said: "Search your feelings, Luke." You know what the truth is already. Zen, baby, zen.
Or just stick with both. Why choose?

Either stick with both, or go for the one that has the potential of making more money, and gets the business!! It's a marketing thing, use it to your advantage. Logic........ Jazzman

Like others have mentioned, I'd look outside of your love for the music alone. That's easy as you feel the two bands are equally rewarding.
Considering the potential longevity of both acts would be a good place to start. You can do this by considering the other band members and their individual goals. Is one band a tighter knit organization than the other?? Is one likely to implode or lose a valuable member(s) in the near future?
With many 'new' successful bands, it was longevity that served as a basis for their success. Bands like 'No Doubt' and 'Goo Goo Dolls' burst on the charts after having been together for 10 years or more. THat's not at all uncommon. So, is there one band you see yourself with in the long run more than the other?

thanks for the replies all ... a lot of "stick with both" answers ... which unfortunately was the point of my post, thats not an option as for other elements ... money making? about the same (though my percentage is bigger with a 3-peice than 4 ) and I cant do it. I cant think in financial terms when it comes to bands. not my style. longevity? so hard to tell. its a relationship thing you know? "oh honey, I love you, lets be together for ever! or at least until someone better comes along that I didnt forsee." but both bands are equally dedicated. well, I havent even auditioned for the second band yet so its still hypothetical part of me wants them to decide against me so I dont have to choose you know

You want your cake and you want to eat it too. Flip a coin.
Stick with the one where there is less of a drive time or go with the one that is the most artistically expressive.
If I had to make a choice between a money band or a fun band I would go with the fun band- but lots of people are just the opposite.

If other things are equal, go with the band with the ugliest guys. That will make you look better.

As Gene Simmons said, "Whoever says they're in a rock band because of music alone is lying. They want the sex and money!!" At least some of us aren't whores!!

just to close this up ... I went to an audition for the band I hadnt officially joined yet. it had its ups and downs. on the musical side, mostly up. when we tried working through a couple of the written songs, it was awkward (as to be expected) but I got the vibe that it would be a good thing if I played exactly what the old bassist played and that didnt sit well with me. then when we "jammed" on a couple riffs he had written it came together well. personality side, mostly up. we chatted, joked, all went well. lifestyle side, mostly down. im not much of a drinker and generally find it tricky to relate to people that list bars as thier primary hangout. I got nothing against having a laugh and a refreshing beverage, but I tend toward coffee more than beer you know. id like to be able to hang out with a band after a rehersal or something. id have a hard time with that with these guys.
to complicate things, they have shows lined up (prior to thier last bassist bailing) in the next month. unfortunately im still getting the set learned for this other band im in for a couple shows we have booked, and im working on some solo material that I plan on recording in about a month.
they have a couple other guys to try out this week. I left it with "I dig the music, and would love to play it, but getting a set down in two weeks with all the other stuff ive got going that takes priority isnt realistic. if you find a cat that fits the bill, more power to ya. if not, gimmie a ring" ... even if they do. ill more than likely turn 'em down. gotta stay focused.
so there you have it. thanks for all your ideas/thoughts.
