The were a bunch of Gadd transcriptions from his recent clinic tour in Drum! a couple of months ago. There was a paradiddle funk solo transcribed.

Don't worry about how HE is applying it.  Just apply it a way YOU can handle and experiment from there.

But probably the most basic way is RH on the HH, LH on the SD.  Start playing paradiddles w/ accents on the 2.

Take a listen to "Funk the Dumb Stuff" by Tower of Power if another reference helps.  Good paradiddle groove going on in that song with right hand on hi-hat, left hand on snare.

A paradiddle is played thus :

RLRR LRLL

There are variations on this, which Gadd uses to great effect.  One variation is :

rllr lrrl  which Gadd uses, playing right hand on the hi-hat, left hand on the snare.  Accent the first note of each grouping - thus :

Rllr Lrrl etc

and keep the unaccented notes as quiet as possible.

Other paradiddle variations are

RRLR LLRL etc

RLRL LRLR etc
