what are your most embarrassing moments of drumming? mine was when i totally screwed up a nice roll entering the chorus of the song and had to pause for a sec to get set.

I've kind of gotten past that. Playing the smoky bar scene, you really have to screw up something to have anyone kind of notice a little bit.
I once played for a wet t-shirt contest and ended up with a wet t-shirt in one of my cases. Mrs. Dog found it a couple of weeks later. That was awkward.

Last summer during one gig, I started daydreaming during a really monotonous song, when I snapped out of it I suddenly realized we were going into the ending. So I played the ending and stopped. Well, we were actually only about half way through song and I stopped playing just before the guitar solo. The rest of the band sort of ground to a halt. That was bad. Fortunately I probably make the fewest mistakes in the band, so no one gave me crap and laughed it off. It was still really embarrasing though.

There was that time I decided to get up and add some drums to a solo guitar piece (I don't know the tune, but I want to say that it was a Clapton one; lyrics went like "hey, hey", etc.) I sit down while being ignorant of the entertaining qualities of a solo guitarist, I try a shuffle, promptly lose the feel, guitarist shakes his head—NO—after four bars, I retreat from the drumkit to our designated break-table for that evening. Yeah, that really sucked. It was a few people in a dive bar, though, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I can still hear the guitarist apologizing for the poor rendition of "Aqualung" ("I'm sorry; that was crap"). Actually, if you count the filthy drunk at the bar shouting "Freebird!" ( and our obliging to his humble request!), the misplaced PA system causing feedback through the first half of the evening (we learned on the fly that the speakers go in front of the mic's), and our underage friends showing up after empathetically being told NOT to (a real slap in the owner's face, that one), the whole evening was a long, embarassing trainwreck with occasional bright spots.

Oh, I have had a few of those I remember been playing at a club with this cover band. We (percussionist & I) were playing this batucada-like pattern while the singer was doing sort of a belly-dancing. Well, I absolutly forgot the fill to end the pattern and start the song. Started yelling to the other guy to ask him to play the fill so I could follow, but he couldn't hear me. So what do I did? Played a whatever fill and stoped it in the 1 of the next measure. No body besides the band noticed it, but what an angry face do that girl had! But now we are even. We were playing at a restaurant 2 weeks ago. This was a probably steady gig, because I'm friend with one of the managers, but we can say goodbye to it now. That girl sang EVERY song out of tune! At the end of the gig I was embarrased that I just packed back my things a left. Edit: I also once stopped playing in the middle of a song because I could not hear the band. The only thing coming out of my monitor was my drumset - stupid thing. Why should I need to hear more drums?

Many years ago we were playing as the "opening act" for another band at a large outdoor party. The headline band was already set up and nothing was to be moved, so we had to set up in front of their equipment. My location was especially bad because I couldn't hear anything but my drums. It turned out to be a distaster. I vowed after that to never play again without some sort of monitor.

These are things that I really don't want to talk about- they aren't funny (to me anyways) at all. These moments can be quite embarassing, but I think it's a good way to learn to accept mistakes and say « After all, I'm human and I have the right to make mistakes. » It is a normal behaviour that's not always accepted in our society.

But that's all the details y'all are going to get! But, if I knew--er--if you divulged the details, you would make it known to others how to prevent such a happening from occurring in the future! Yeah, that's it.

Actually, to date my most embarrassing moment was at our last show - I had to play even though I had a horrible head cold (there is no "bench" in rock-n-roll) and I had to keep ducking down behind my congas to blow my nose.
My next really embarrassing moment will probably happen tomorrow night - my first show with my new SPD-S and I have to change patches on almost every song. I fully expect that I'll end up on the wrong patch at some point and probably produce a giant gong at full volume when I'm thinking that I'm hitting a temple block sound. All those rubber pads look the same, ya' know. Actually, I am both excited and terrified of playing this thing tomorrow. Wish me luck!
