interesting topic... some of the "great" bands/musicians I never got into at the time were never that great to me (which is why I wasn't into them), but as I grew my tastes change and these are some that I've been a "Johnny come lately" to: The Who, Rolling Stones, Pretty much any jazz legend. I was never into jazz untill these last few years. my goal is to surround my life with music 24/7. that means after a while I have to discover new music even if its been around for 30 years.

I have never seen the appeal of Clapton, Dylan, Neil Young or Stevie Ray. As for bands I'll agree with the aforementioned Stones, Dead and Nirvana. I'll add AC/DC and Kiss. There are numerous others but those quickly come to mind. I can see this getting ugly quick so everyone should remember "Different strokes for different folks".

After watching the Grateful Dead show (70's) on my PBS station last week, I definately have to concur with not getting the Dead. Maybe you have to be stoned out of your gourd. . .
I also agree with not getting KISS. I collected thier cards when I was in 5th grade but never appreciated thier music.
Here's a new one: I just don't get the Flaming Lips. Some of the drumming is "Bonhamesque" and sounds good but I don't see why all the critical acclaim. It seems like the Lips are a band that for some reason is cool to like.

Xena, sorry to hear you don't like U2. I guess you won't be envious of the fact that I scored 2 free seats in a catered box (valet parking) at the Pepsi Center in Denver!!!! Is it April 20th yet!?

It seems like the Lips are a band that for some reason is cool to like. you know, i didn't even know the flaming lips were a real band until recently. i'd seen them on some commercial for some techno-gadget thingie, and thought it was a made-up band. then i saw an ad promoting some upcoming gig of theirs, and i thought, 'oh, they're a real band.' **shrug** xena, my boyfriend doesn't dig u2, either. i was actually pretty into them in the 80s. maybe coz they were kinda political and i thought bono was cute. listening to them now, i can take them or leave them, but they sorta represent the 80s for me. they did put on a really cool show. one of the few from the 80s that i remember!

LOVE the Flaming Lips. One of the greatest pop bands around as far as I'm concerned. There's so much music I'm just not into it'd be ridiculous to list all the bands. Not that I'm closed minded, far from it (I'd like to think), just that there are certain things that spark my interest in a band and many just don't do it. And please bear in mind that all this is strictly my opinion based on what I've heard which ranges from several albums to one tune. And there are some that may for one album but not another. Medeski Martin & Wood are like that. Thier first two albums were stellar. I thought Shack Man and Combustication were mediocre at best. So ... in general: jam bands (i.e. Phish, MOE, Allmans). by the numbers 'blues' (i.e. Johnny Lang, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bonnie Rait) fake book jazz (i.e. any Marsalis) music that seems focused on theory instead of ideas (i.e. Joe Satriani, Planet X) formulaic rock (i.e. Creed, Nickelback) The Eagles highly derivative modern pop that thinks its new and exciting (i.e. Ted Leo, Interpol) pop punk (i.e. Green Day, Blink 182) punk rock with no thought behind it (i.e. The Ramones, The Germs) new R&B (i.e. Ashanti, Usher) hmm ... seems like a lot but I do have an extensive collection. Some of which someone not me might consider the above, again, its all just my opinion here. But theres a certain vibe I get from some artists that makes me find them tedious. I'm not going to fault them their work (hence my continued referral to them as 'artists'), they are just as legit as anyone else. Its just that they dont get any part of my pay check

Well, I'll add my selections, many of which have been listed already; i'll try to explain my reasons why to fill the space. U2—I find them boring, to be honest. Bono's voice isn't my kind of voice, and I find the sounds not to my taste. Allman Brothers, for the most part—I don't identify with much of what they espouse, I don't guess, but I cannot deny that I like a few portions of a couple of ther songs, for the sound. Here's one example. The Polyphonic Spree—I think they sing poorly, and the gowns spook me. Most of the Grateful Dead—Much of the live shows is utter crap, in my opinion, that nearly anyone would need a lungbusting drag off a fatty (as it were) to appreciate. I like the Mother McCree's stuff very much, though, as well as the odd song here and there. The Righteous Brothers—Not my thing. Sorry. Neat low voice of Bill Medley's, though. Metallica, related hard rock/metal—I can't identify with it, simply. I'm never angry to such proportions. Formulaic rock, blues-by-numbers, etc. per 563's suggestion—I simply find it lame. Rap and hip-hop—See Metallica. Even the "good" stuff reminds me of that which was bastardized from those nice, catchy pre-Public Enemy days. New country music with overt political and proselytizing messages—Enough said. I'm sure I've got more, but it will be really hard...I like most everything else.

I am really surprised that Mark/563 doesn't care for The Ramones.
I don't feel like I ever need to sit down and listen to The Beatles. It's not that I don't like them - I certainly do. I think it's that they're the bedrock of 90% of the music I listen to. I hear things all the time and think "that's Beatles-esque"; Nirvana, Weezer, Cheap Trick, Andrew Bird, David Bowie &c &c &c. The Beatles' shoulders have been stood upon to such a degree that listening directly to them seems almost obtuse.
It would be like if you were going to study physics, and you spent two years studying Newton. Now, I'm not saying that Newton isn't important - our system of the science of physics is largely based on his writings. But his work has been built on to such a degree that no matter who you do study - Einstein, Hawking, whoever - you're still studying Newton. In fact, by the time you get to college, you should be taking Newton for granted.
Am I making any sense?

I never got The Doors or Bob Dylan, and I really don't understand the appeal of The Grateful Dead or The Ramones either. It's not like I haven't tried or anything, I just don't get it.
