That's from the National Lampoon Mr. Rogers interviews the bass player, right?

I haven't heard that in years.

Why dont you go practice instead of posting nonsense questions?

Why don't you resist the temptation to post unhelpful and argumentative responses to three-month-old threads?

I think you have to find the zone to be really tight.  I think once you are in that zone you really don't think at all about what you are playing - hopefully the hours of practise put in before playing with others makes those grooves and fills second nature.  I also think the key is to listen to the overall sound being produced and make sure that you complement the music.  Those drummers who listen to themselves are, in my experience, more likely to overplay and to drift from the groove.

Get in the zone!!

I play all the subdivisions with my teeth (sp?). And when I've been grooving for a really long time, the subdivisions goes away and I'm only in it with my teeth;)

BillyG,that is friggin hilarious!  That is the perfect thing to say to a booking agent.

When I'm groovin I feel better than an orgasm, and there are no thoughts moving through me.  It is like not existing and this only happens when the musicians I'm playing with are on the exact same level as if we are one.

When I'm not groovin,it feels like I'm trying to resist or fight the music.  This is also vice versa with the musicians I'm playing with.  This does happen even if we are on time with each other sometimes.

Up to now i had found myself mesmerised by the vocalists rear waggling about. Often listening broadly to the band sound and fitting in. Recently i got the very good Billy Ward DVD Big Time which explained a breathing method and grooving.
To further the interest i have just finished reading and doing the meditations from Kenny Werner's book/CD Effortless Mastery which covers this topic. Though a bit radical ( but valid) i found it works for me. I find my drumming has improved so much and my practicing has reduced and been more productive than ever.
Posts on the topic touch on the similar concept as in the book where the master sits and breaths while the drummer within just plays effortlessly emmitting groove.

IMO worth some spare gig money to improve ones drumming without effort. Check it out. Cool

When I`m grooving I have this "Keith Jarrett" thing going on. I`m "singing" or humming all the time, but it works for me. I can`t stop doing it. And one thing I`ve figured out that takes my concentration away from the groove is when I start daydreaming about women and all the beautiful things about them...   Cool
