Howdy, I just picked up one of those nifty danmar drum risers for a gig this Sat. and was wondering what heads might be good to use for the situation.  Im using a 16x16 floor tom, and the music is King Crimson meets John Zorn with some drum & bass thrown in as well, all improv. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I've got a 16x16 gretch floor tom that I sometimes convert to a kick using the Pearl Jungle Gig like this:

I use an Aquarian studio-x batter with a Fiberskin resonant head with little to no muffling.  YMMV.

I was wondering how your danmar worked out on Saturday. I ordered one as well but it has yet to arrive.

for my 16x16, I use a simple Aquarian Classic Clear w/ an Ebony ambassador.  tune to as low a pitch as possible that's a bit boomy, but not too tight feeling on my pedal.  then I'll flatten an Evans EQ pad, which lies snug against both heads, given that it is a 16" length.

another idea is to use an Aquarian StudioX, which is essentially a tougher remo PS head.  no need for the towel, tho it wont be as soft or as forgiving feeling as my Evans/towel method.

if you just want a low fat BAP like sound, try an Aquarian Performance II.  even deader sounding, but again, while the towel is unneeded, you wont get that soft "pedal buried in the batter head" feel.

I play a Gretsch Catalina Club in Church and small room situations and the Aquarian Force 1 batter with the a ported stock Resonant head works great. Still have to baffle the crap out of it to get away from the cardboard sound. I've tried various head tensions and got tired of messing with it so I just put in a homemade down baffle. Sounds good now. Force one (of course single ply) batter leaves plenty of resonance.
