I finally got some drums-only mixes of some tracks I recorded a while back. I put them together with some clips I've already posted here about some of my snare drums, and threw together a quick web page for anybody who's interested. http://www.keithcronin.com/studio_samples.htmlSame kit, recorded in two different studios by different engineers and producers. I was surprised by both the similarities and the differences in how the drums sounded. Check it out if you're interested!

My favorite fill is that on the 1966 Acrolite sample, beginning around :53 and going through the fade.
I love the rhythm on "Beautiful Spirit", as well as the cross-sticks.
"Lullabye" made me pick up my omniscent Jazz Brushes and try that rhythm out; I love it. It has that "Christmastime Is Here" vibe to it, the brush part of which being my favorite brush part ever. Nice switch, too. Which brushes did you use on that, incidentally?

I really dig your Acrolite snare on (You are a) Beautiful Spirit, but I'm undecided on the kick sound between the two different sessions. Actually, I like the kick in the snare samples the best. Where/who recorded these?

Cool stuff, Keith - thanks for sharing these clips! FWIW, I have to say - altho I'd need to hear them in the context of the full mix to really judge - I dig the snare sound on "Adored" best of the bunch - vive le honk!

Thanks! Those are just regular Regal Tip brushes - the telescoping ones with the black rubber handles. The snare samples were recorded in that second session - the one where I recorded Adored and Lullabye. I haven't heard the full mixes yet, so it will be interesting to see how the drums fit into the big picture. This is the downside of session work: the drummer usually cuts tracks early on, but may not be involved in subsequent tracking and mixing. I really like the songs, so I'm hoping they'll turn out well!

Yeah, that's about as nice as it gets. I liked all 4 snare drums in the first section of clips. Your noodling is even inspiring. Love how you phrase your hat lifts- that was some good shiznit maynard!!! The toms are really dialed in nice. Textured coated on top and bottom you say? No doubt, kinda slappy but with super clear and warm sustain... SAH WHEAT! I didn't mind the kick at all and actually prefered the subkick treatment over the latter clips in tone- but that's just an opinion. Yooz definitely got's the cereal- To everyone else peeping in and listening... post your sound clips and pictures! WE LUV iT No one cares if you stink!

i'll say again... sooo niiiiice, the "Spirit" excerpt is a lesson in patience/time, and the room sounds just heavenly. and while you may not be totally sussed about the acrolite, i totally dig it. makes me actually wanna trawl ebay and pick one up. "Adored" sounds like Gadd jumping onto/into a big ol' bonham approved Ludwig kit/room. dunno why the feel just strikes me as Gadd-like, but i guess cause it just feels good. and love those ghost notes in "Lullaby". makes it a semi-bonham-esque shuffle! hopefully the rest of the music doesnt cover over those killer little ghost notes. btw, i can hear a bit of headphone bleed on a few tracks, and they arent too shabby. as always, good stuff, mr. Ack.

Thanks for the kind words!
Going back and looking at photos, I'm wondering if I'm remembering correctly. Now that I think back, I may have used the Slingeryo copper snare (not the Acro) on Spirit and Beautiful Mistake. I'm kinda thinking that's what I did. I may have to go back and correct that web page.

Thanks, Quicksfoot!
In going over my photos and racking my tiny brain, I've concluded that I did use the cheapo 5.5x14 copper Slingeryo on Spirit and Beautiful Mistake. It was my first time using the drum, and obviously it delivered - it beat out all my other go-to drums for that particular room, engineer, and set of songs. Definitely well worth the 60 bucks I spent on the drum!

Thanks Mr. A. For those of us who don't have a chance to compare, that helps.
Oh, and I love the grooves! While I was over at your site I took another cruise through your drum licks and grooves pages. Nice!

Well, Certainly some nice solid playing as usual Mr. A. Great brushwork as well. It sure inpired me to dig mine out. As for the Snares, I am with James...I LOVE the honk. The 66 sounds killer. Definatly my fav of the bunch. The toms sound great to and I am now thinking of switching mine up to the coated tops and bottoms. I really really dig them. I perplexed on how to feel about the kickdrum with the amp thingy, I am not sure it made much of a diffrence overall. The kick sounds great don't get me wrong, just not sure what that actually "brings to the table" in the big picture. Thanks so much for posting the samples. -RHS p.s. As far as not remembering what what used where? The long term memory loss effects us all who are not 20 anymore . Note my reference to finding my brushes. Now worries man. Stellar as usual. Roolz like Ozzy used to.

Put me in the '66 camp as well. That is one nice sounding snare.
The Blacro isn't exactly chopped liver either.
Good stuff.
I loved the kick sound too. Is that your Gretsch 22?

The kick sounds great don't get me wrong, just not sure what that actually "brings to the table" in the big picture. I'm with you. It sounds decent, but isn't conspuously more massive-sounding or anything. I'm happy with the sound, but probably had inflated expectations of what it might have sounded like. I loved the kick sound too. Is that your Gretsch 22?
Thanks! Yeah, that's the old 14x22 Gretsch. I love that drum, both live and in the studio.

How nice! You always make these nice generous samples, too; something that I always remember.
Those drums are mixed in very well. You may be slightly amused to know that the first track I listened to was "Lullabye"...I see that the three crashes around 1:30 fit better than I thought. I knew it was something of an expressive strain, there, when I first heard it.
I also like what I presume to be the pedal steel; it has that "Jackie Blue" sound to it (which I intend as a compliment, lest you infer otherwise for any reason), but it also reminds me of the one used in George Strait's rather underrated hit "Meanwhile"â€"which is to say, a sort of vintage-y modern sound, but not quite, but certainly fresh no matter the caseâ€"I like it.
All I've really listened to was "Lullabye" and two others, but it's all great over here.
I do wonder how Joker heard the mix on the drums only samples, since I'm using headphones like I always do for critical listening, and I couldn't hear a thing (at least at the level I had it).

Yes, very nice. That Slingerland snare impresses more and more. I really like the sound of your toms, too. Deep, while retaining a lot of tone. Do you notice a big difference using the coated heads as resos instead of clears when playing at gigs or is this set up only for recording? Also, how similar do your toms sound in person to their sound on these recordings?

Thanks! I use the same heads for live work, unless I'm playing really hard; then I put dot heads on top. I just love the sound of coated heads, top and bottom. They sound the same live - I use that 10" rack tom for gigs ranging from session work to tuxedo dates on my microkit. On my cheapo Forum kit, I found the drums sounded too dull with coated heads top and bottom, so I have clears on the bottom. But on good, bright-sounding wood drums like my recording kit, coated heads sound really warm and full.

Super sound and playing Keith on the final mixes. Your groove is really really good on all the tracks with just the right amount of human element. I really liked the acro snare the most I thought. I think it was in the first or second clip... sounded like it anyways from what I've heard in the past. We should all be able to play so well.

Great sound, Keith! Both you and the kit. I love the clear, round sound you get from the toms. I especially like the emphasis on that snare drum 'honk'!

Okay, yes. You must have had the sound cranked. I compared the mix and the drum track of "Adored" and "Lullabye" side by side, and the remainder mix was there (at ant's-whisper volume in the back) when I doubled the volume.
