So as I invest more and more in equipment i'm finding out which companys are over rated. So lets get it off our chests what companys/products do you think are just over rated and why. Same Goes with underrated. DW cannot come up in this conversation, thats just asking for it to get dirty. I guess I'll start. I'm not starting this just to be a hater, I think we could all learn something from each others knowledge maybe find some new products, lets keep this constructive.

I'll start, the one company that I really dislike is OCDP, I just feel they rely on Travis Barkers image and their crazy finishes. I personally feel they sacrifice sound with insane designs. To say something positive though, I think they're vented snares are quite interesting and defaintly have a perpose in certian genres.

As underrated goes...the metronome...haha sike...seriously though I think yamaha drums are way underrated by the younger generation, seriously I think they are probably the best sounding large drum company, I see alot of older cats playing them but young cats just pass them by, maybe this is just the crowd im around.

I didn't know the 20x20 was popular, this is the size of my bass drum incidentally. I have had it for 3 years now, perhaps I am a trendsetter  Roll Eyes. I thought it to be a really interesting size, I loved the sound, so thats what I ordered and I haven't looked back. I wouldn't say they are overrated, just cool(especially green ones) because that's what I play Cool

I just see alot of kids buying them these days because of their look and style. I was expecing you to say something, but I figured you probably had a good idea why you were buying it. Like I said i've just seen alot of kids going out and buying them and not really taking the unique sound into consideration. For example this kid i know bought a dw kit in 12x7,14x10,20x20. He loves how it looks but in the end its not the sound i think he was looking for, plus his guitarist who runs a recording studio hates the kick because the kid dosn't really know how to get the proper sound out of it.

Hahaha, i remember the pacific ez kit, like the year pacific came out and it made the new pacifics of today look like DW's, i remember having the toms tilted wayyy too much, god i found a picture of how i used to set that thing up, so funny don't know how i even played it. I remember tuning the toms for me was just them to sound different and go higher to lower hahaha, sometime i'd wind up with my floor tom higher than my first rack tom! Then i had the "CRAZY" idea of using 2 toms....untill my friends told me it was weird and i was forced back to the typical 3 haha. Oh man.

What's the deal with 20x20 kick drums? Seriously, I was looking into building this size drum because I've heard many that recorded very well. But I've never heard one in real life. Also, a lot of my favorite drummers in the past have played this size drum, so it always intriqued me. I'm honestly curious about the pros and cons of this size drum?

I love my 20x20. I wanted the punch of a 20 without losing the boom of a 22, and this size delivers both, plus, I like to sit my toms lower and the smaller diameter helps with that. I love the resonance the extra depth delivers. I have it set up with a Superkick 2/regulator combo and it just sounds so good. The only con I can think of is the footprint the depth of the drum takes up on stage, but I haven't had much of a problem, too me the sound of it takes precidence.

I second your Yamaha comment, Pig.  I've never been able to play the real high end of their line, but the intermediate area is IMHO the best around at the price point.  I also like their hardware.

Okay ding* ding* Put'Em Up!!!  I don't like Pearl.  As an overall statement.  I know it's broad and probably not fair.  I only own an Eliminator Hi-hat stand, and it's good, but I feel for $120 a Hi hat stand should be better than that.  I've changed out the cams and made adjustments and the best I can come up with is "that's ok"
It doesn't help that the only Pearl kit I've been able to play on for any length of time belongs to someone that I can't stand the tuning preferences of.

Aquarian heads - underated.
Evans snare heads - love 'em.
Remo heads - overrated.  Except the black dot cs heads, those are awesome.

Meinl cymbals - way underrated.  The first time I played one I bought one.  Like it better then my Zildjian A.  Not popular in this country - I don't know why?

IMHO, the most underrated snare drums around are the Premier "Modern Classic" line - and I think Premier gear in general is underrated, but especially the MC snares.  Outstanding instruments.

So true, primeirs sound great in gneral. Iagree about peral, i've never liked pearl espeically their kick drums, too flat. The reference series has redeemed them a bit with me.

I have a lot more questions about this and would like to talk further, but I don't want to change the direction of the this thread's original purpose. I'm going to start a new thread. Please give some input if you have any--

I can't really name any companies that are over rated. I mean everyone from Yamaha to Pearl makes amazing drums and they obviously fit a vast amount of peoples needs. Now as far as under rated goes. I say Peace is at the top of the list. Having first hand experiance with them I can say they are an amazing company that has definatly made a good name for themselves and will continue to do so.

The only thing I can think of at the moment is that I think Zildjian A series cymbals are over-rated.  It's stretch, I suppose, to say that, but they certainly aren't as good as they used to be.

Yeah- I bought a pack of these thinking I was getting some real goods- the better my ear gets the less I like them.  (The A's, not the A customs)  I do like the master sound Hi-hats though.  < I think those are customs?
