I still have a few hundred of music that has never been, nor is likely to be reissued. I do miss the 12 x 12 cover art though, and readable liner notes.

Yeah.  I really miss the cover art.  The Stones' Sticky Fingers had to be one of the most creative.

Over time most of my LP jackets developed grayish white wear-circles on them!  Liner notes - boy, there's a lost art form!

I still have the gold vinyl issue of "We're an American Band".  Not as nice as the Linda Ronstadt picture disc, mind you, but it was still a cool gimmick.

love, love, love vinyl.  I DJ a bunch so it's still an important part of my "professional" life.  And yes, bringing 100 12" records w/ you on the subway sucks just about as much as bringing drums.

Vinyl owns (there's a discussion about this on ClockTalk that's worth looking into as well).  to sum up, it FEELS like music to me.  While i understand the clarity that comes from the extra hi-end that you can get in a digital recording, i just don't care.  you can SEE the music in an LP or 45.  You get more volume plus more dynamic range.

aside from the fact that records get scratched and start to sound grimey, forget it... nothing even comes close.  I'll always get the CD or even mp3 of a song I like, but if it's important to me, i'll always try to find it on vinyl-- cuz that's the music.

p.s.
Still have a copy of "Dark Side of the Moon" on LP.

Funny thing, I cracked mine open the other day and it was full of seeds. Roll Eyes

Seriously though, I've parted with the past (gotten it all down to clothes and drums) three times. When I moved to Europe I sold all my albums at a garage sale. Gave them away for a song, or less in most cases.

But what really bums me out is that I discovered 7" records and really got into collecting them for a while. It was a great way to learn about mostly unsigned bands (not just punk either). I'd meet people with huge collections and who always were ready to turn you on to their latest fave. Got rid of 'em all when I moved to CA. Sad

Yes, I built up a nice collection of albums prior to the CD.  I wore several albums out while practicing drums, so started recording them to cassette for practice purposes.  Over the years I've thinned the collection by selling or giving away about 400 records.  I still have about 200, most of which are originals from the early '60s up to the early '70s, with a few rare ones in the mix.

I haven't listened to any of them since about 1995 when I sold my turntable.  I was given a very high end Denon table that needed some work, so figured I'd fix it and sell my old one.  I couldn't find a shop that could fix the Denon because of parts availability.  So, one of these days I will buy another player and dust off the records.

For those in the market, I picked up a new Music Hall turntable from this place a couple of years ago:

I started playing LP's on my little record player by my drums as a kid.  Boy is that funny.  I like the non-audiophile players where you could stack up a whole bunch of them.

However, CD's started getting strong when I was in college and the improvement in clarity inspired me to phase out most of my records by the time I was out of college.  I still have about 20 of them but I haven't listened to them in years.  I haven't had a working turn table for I don't know how long.

Like Christopher, I loved the day my kids came home from school and asked if I had any of the giant CD's!  I showed them mine and they were just amazed...  When I tried to tell them we didn't have VCR's or DVD players to watch movies on when I was there age, they were HORRIFIED!

DaveFromChicago brought up the gold vinyl "We're An American Band" LP.  I've got the gold vinyl 45 of that song.
Other favorites that are in color in my collection are J. Geils Band "Blood Shot" clear red LP, and Dave Mason's "Alone Together" swirl pattern LP.  I've also got the original Golden Earring "Moon Tan" album, with the naked girl on the over! Shocked Wink  I bought that one when I was still in high school, in little 'ol West Plains, Missouri... at a Walgreens.  I'm surprised they even let it in the store Cheesy

I have some vinyl still.   Not much.   And I don't actively listen to it honestly.   Most of it I've gladly replaced on CD (all the Japan and Talk Talk stuff, etc).    I have a decent collection of indie artists from North Carolina and DC on 7" that will get dubbed to CD eventually.

Other than that, the only thing I WANT to listen to on vinyl is my 70's Tom Waits albums.   Dirt and scratches make a huge (and to my ears positive) effect on albums like Blue Valentine and Small Change.

I've been collecting vinyl for the past several years (I'm only 24), but my girlfriend bought me an all-in-one turntable last Christmas, so I could finally play them.  I really enjoy the warmer sound from the ol' Licorice Pizzas.  Plus, it's got that cool retro feel that I just love. Cool  I love listening to Hendrix or the James Gang, or even the Beach Boys, on vinyl

I'm a HUGE BB fan! I have over 200 of their albums (vinyl). I tend to collect certain groups until i get all of them (and variations). BB, Monkees, Styx, Jan & Dean, Ventures among many others.  My father gave me his old rock 45 collection...just so happens to be a Elvis Sun 45 in there..book value in the range of $3k, my daughter is going to be using it to go to college Smiley
