I read somewhere in modern drummer about Murray Spivak being a guru drum teacher...kinda of regarded in the same way as Fredie Gruber.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here knows if he has any videos out and what his teaching ciriculum consists of. Thanks...

Murray  used to teach in L. A. I think I know that Shelly Manne studied early on with him and a lot of really great players in L.A. . I think he was a percussionist and more of a formal player than a jazz guy.

That's all I can tell you I don't think that he is still alive but if you need more info I could ask my Dad. I never did see any books by him but that does not mean he did not write any.

Good Luck

B.L.

Check out Joe Morrellos videos he has great technique and has taught a lot of great players if you can't find anything on Murray

Critter -  I've never heard of the guy.   With a quick look around though I came up with this ad for his video:

Murray Spivack was one of the master teachers who shaped the concepts of teaching snare drum and drum set technique in this century. In this video, Louis Bellson takes a live on-camera lesson with the master. This, as well as interviews with other students such as David Garibaldi, shows the basic principals of Murray's teaching technique. Also included is an incredible extended solo by Bellson as he puts it all together at the drum set

Sorry ... I've been out trying to make a living, feed my family, you know ... all those unimportant things in life.  Wink

I think I may have some materials from Murray Spivak; I dig around and see what I can find.

He is a type of Freddie Gruber in that he had a methodical approach to grip, wrist and arm motion(s). I know he passed away in the early part of the 90's.

Many of you may not know this about Mr. Spivak, but he was a sound designer in Hollywood and worked on countless films such as King Kong, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Spartacus, Tora! Tora! Tora! and Hello Dolly! ... which I believe he got an Academy Award for.

And yes, there is a video out about the guy as a drum instructor. I believe it's self titled ... Murray Spivak ... or something close to that.

Do a little search on Google or something; I'm sure you'll find more out that way.

Mark, LoL I feel kind a dumb writing that.  I was very busy doin something else when I wrote that.  Dave explains how a drummer can develop tendinitis.  I found it very helpful.
