Non-musical mother of a young drummer girl.

Lael played at a "Business After Hours" function last night -- her first gig for REAL MONEY!  Brent Jensen, the director of Jazz Studies at our local college, has been giving her LOADS of gigging experience this semester, including being house drummer several times at the local coffee-house jazz jam.  She got to play a salon/spa grand opening this month too, and got "in kind" pay for that.  No questions for all of you this time, just using a mom's bragging rights in a place that someone might actually care!  When the word "jazz" is mentioned in our town, most people's eyes glaze over.  Lael still likes drums (and jazz) better than boys -- and I'm thrilled.

I'm listening to the clips posted in this forum from Bart's Christmas CD and will be ordering it soon.  It swings.  If you haven't listened yet, be sure you do.  Even if you think you don't need another Christmas CD, I think you need this one!

To this day I've wondered how my Mom ever put up with my playing drums at 14.... But 44 years later she still supports my playing. That's great, I hope she sticks with it.  Wink You're a good parent, let the love shine bright....  Cool

My mom encouraged me to play!  She was always saying, "take those blasted drums out in the barn and play them!"   Grin

I have a younger brother and sister who are twins, and another brother who is  younger than them.  We all play drums.  Sister is into mallets, her twin brother is into concert drumming, the youngest brother is into set.  There were times when the basement looked like the Frank's Drum Shop of the South Side.  Sometimes we all played together.  My folks went out to dinner a lot.

One of my favorite memories is my mom flicking the basement lights off and on to get our attention at dinner time. Smiley  Mom rocked.  I wish she was still here.

Congrats to Lael (sp?) for her $ gig. Being 14 even though you say "its not about the money" (and it's not for me and Lael I'm sure) we all secretly hope to get some. Having followed some of your posts, sounds like Lael is farther ahead than most of us 14 year olds. Grin Grin Grin Grin

Awesome.  Congratulations to both of you!

Thank you all!  It's fun and easy to support Lael's interest in music -- a little harder to be her roadie and driver -- but that isn't a complaint.  Lael says thanks for all of the congrats.  (I guess I'm her personal secretary now too!)

Why doesn't Lael log in to the Café and make some posts herself??  We don't bite.   Grin

Oh wait---don't tell me---she's too busy off practicing like the rest of us should be doing.   Wink

Hehehe, I remember our first paid gig...

Tuesday night in a shady pub crummy pub, I was also 14, and we made 5 bucks each (3 piece band).

Great PA/Mix that night though
