i just popped one of those cold-eze tablets, as i felt a slight dryness and tickle in my throat this morning. so far, i've been meticulous about washing my hands regularly, so i ain't letting no tickle bring me down.

i've used these things 4 or 5 times, and they've worked every time. you have to take them at the first sign, otherwise you risk still getting sickies, but they've worked for me. stick to the one dose, though. i once popped two and got very nauseous.

i don't really know how they work, but they definitely do the job. now all i need is a little chicken soup and i'm golden.

cluck, cluck.

Hiya, smoggy. I believe they work by coating the membranes of the throat to keep bact/viruses from sticking. Another great tip that we've used w/ success to battle a sore throat is to wear a turtleneck or a neck warmer to bed (and during the day if you can manage it). What this does is heat up the throat to a temperature incompatible for bacteria and viruses--knocks 'em dead. Works great!

I found that a couple margarita's with salt on the rim works too. Then it knocks me out and I get the sleep I needed in the first place. I would advise doing that at home....   Wink   Then when my wife says, "Take these.".... I just grin and mix another.   Grin

Recent success story:

"Airborne"  (sic?)

This stuff, available in food markets and your average drugstore, and which supposedly a second grade teacher came up with, has kept me from getting the creeping crud - which is putting people down all around me.

I believe zinc is one of the ingredients in this.

It's a recent discovery for me, before which I was using a zinc throat spray.

feh.

so much for my theory about the wonders of zinc.

that little tickle i had dec. 5th turned into a full-scale upper respiratory fiasco that i'm still battling. i've done 2 rounds of antibiotic therapy, plus steroids and prescription cough syrup with codeine [groovy stuff, that syrup]. i sounded like a wild boar everytime i coughed.

obviously, i shoulda gone to the doc sooner, as he would've caught the real ailment in time.

i'm basically okay now, but still need more travel on the healing road. at least i can hoc a loogey. nothing worse than an unproductive cough. that crap hurts!

Don't discount the zinc too quickly smoggy. Sometimes a regular cold can turn into bronchitis--sounds like what you might have. And going to the dr. early wouldn't have done diddly, b/c he would have told you to go home and rest and drink fluids.

Next time w/ a cold, take it easy and rest, drink a lot ( I mean REALLY give that bladder a workout!). Chicken soup does have medical benefits! You might try echinacea (get a good brand) if you don't have any underlying immune problems. Take a lot of vitamin C, drink OJ, take your zinc, wear the turtleneck/neck warmer thing. Wash your hands frequently and start taking a decent multivitamin.

(A note about handwashing: in 1998 I did 3 months of a chemo drug called Cytoxan. The point was to try and get my white cell count as low as possible w/o causing even more health problems. The most important things I did during those 3 mos were to wash my hands as soon as I came in the door, and start using my own pen when signing credit card receipts at stores. I never got a cold during those 3 mos and I attribute it mostly to handwashing. I still do both of those things and rarely get sick.)

wow, robyn -- inspiring tale there. i wish you continued good health.

i really don't know what happened. i had no fever or any of the usual cold/flu suspects, just a lot of bronchoconstriction with a lingering harsh cough that sounded brutal. like the croup. it made sleep next to impossible.

i feel tons better now, so i am grateful for modern medicine. but i hear ya on the preventive therapy front. i need to take vitamin c again regularly. have always had good results with it. i'm thinking of trying that ester-c stuff. easier on the belly. my aunt, who has allergies more severe than mine, said it made a big difference.

thanx for the tips! i really dislike having to take rx drugs!
