I had seen the pics of the snare you posted in this thread. It came out pretty cool. When I bought the stain to do my snare drum my boss suggested I get a colored stain instead of a traditional one. Green in my case, since I had originally wanted to paint my snare British Racing Green with white pin stripes (still dreaming of a kit like that). I opted for walnut though. I was too scared to try the green stain, at least on this particular shell (means a lot to me and didn't want to mess it up). So what you used was a dye, and not an actual stain? I know you can control the translucency when you get the stain mixed at the paint shop. I love semi-transparent stains. I like to be able to see the wood grain as well. The walnut stain I used came out so nice on the maple wood. The spar varnish I put over the stain only helped to bring out all the different tones and a hint of amber glow.

I'm using an aniline dye that I bought from Drum Foundry in mix form, and I added distilled water to mix it, at a ratio suggested by DF.  I'm using that for the most part, but I'm also using a "wash" with just a little bit of dye mixed in with water, at a far lower ratio.  I applied two "coats" of the regular mix, then sanded, and from there I alternately rubbed in a coat of wash, then sanded lightly.  I'm not really sure what I'm doing, and the wash may not be having much of an effect at all, but that's what I did with the two purple snare drums shown earlier.  I like how they came out, so I'm going to do the same thing with these shells.

so I read through about the first 7 or so pages

Recognized a few members and kits from drumdogs
nice to know im not alone Smiley

Anways, here are my babies

The ones on the bottom are after I got my new heads. If your wondering where my double pedals went on the bottom ones, I let my friend rent them for a month for $10 (hustler). I still didnt get them back, and its been over a month, but I realized I dont really need my double pedals and I pretty much only use them for some accents and fills. I could live without the double pedals, but the single pedal im using (the kid I rented the pedals to) is a generic no name brand (groove percussion) pedal. Actualy, thats the pedal from my old kit, because hes the kid who bought my old kit.

but anyways, onto the pics

a pic I took two years ago of my old drums (I sold them about 4 months ago)

my new drums the day after I got them, as well as the new hardware, and new throne

man I love the color

this one is with the garage door open, showing off the satin in the finish

anyways, after about a month, I had somthing happen to one of the lugs in my 14" tom, so while I was fixing it, I tried a new setup

they got fixed about a week after I took those pics, which was a few months ago

but anywaysk, heres them with the new heads, new toys (cowbell, and tamborine), and missing the double pedals. It took me a lonnnng time to figure out where to put my cowbell, comfortably (the bass drum didnt work out for me), but I found the perfect place.

and yes, my crash cymbal is cracked (getting a new one for christmas)

bye bye old heads.

Anyways, the drums are Pacific FS, in blue to black fade. 8, 10, 12, and 14 inch toms, 22x18" bass, and 14" snare. The heads are Aquarian Studio X, and I love them more than anything. They sound AMAZING. They got rid of some of the overtones, but they still know how to sing.

Cymbals are Meinl MCS crash, hats, and ride, 12" wuhan china (love it), and an 8" ziljian zxt splash that I actualy have had since I had my first kit, before I got my MCS. The origional kit only came with a crash and hats, no ride. So unitll I had the MCS, I only had a crash, hi hat, and splash. I didnt know what was more important back then.

anyways, I know that was a little too much, but enjoy the pictures

A couple pics of my Keller Tube Lug Hipgig Kit. 14x16,8x10,10x14,4.75x14 snare and a spare 8x12 that's waiting for some more tube lugs. Love that it uses so little hardware and leaves room to spare in hardware bag. It sounds like a mofo too.

At least a grand cheaper than Yamaha Maple Absolute Nouveaus if bought cheap on ebay and sound comparable. People might be curious -  I spent about $1000 factoring in supplies needed for the build(drill bits, brushes, odds and sods) and shipping costs to Canada. Half of money was tube lugs and wrap. Most components were brand new so guys on a tighter budget could build a small kit for $600-700 using some used hoops and such.

My Dad brought over a box of pictures he found when he moved recently. In it were pictures I didn't know existed, including this one of my first set. Ludwig 60's vintage 3 piece, rotoroms, and Tama concert toms. All cymbals were Zildjian. The wacky looking hardware mounting the Tama's, the roto's, and some cymbals were all made by my Pops the toolmaker. Man I wish I had those back, mismatched and all.

Oh yeah, Charlene Tilton, Lonnie Anderson, and Cheryl Tiegs. They kinda date the picture and me though.

Actually not as cheap as I would have liked and I had to go all the way to Germany to get it (which did save me shipping since I flew on my employers dime).  But I'm not complaining because they are pretty rare in this finish.  The drum is amazingly loud.

Here is the "new to me" Ludwigs set up as of today. Pacifics now reside stacked in a corner. I'll be wrapping the cheap infinity add-on toms in red this winter.

Looks great!  Very nice job wrapping the bass drum counterhoops.

Thanks for the comments. I'm relieved that they turned out well. I'm not the handiest person in the world.  Smiley

Also, thanks very much for your suggestions back when I was asking questions on enlarging lug holes. I ultimately used my Dremil with a certain cutting bit to enlarge holes and it worked like a dream.

The hoops were not too hard except for cutting the wrap straight. I placed my handcut side on the end where the head is so any slight imperfections in the cutting process wouldn't be noticeable. I made sure to use the already factory precut sides of a full sheet of wrap for the end that would face out on the hoops since they're most visible.

If anyone is hesitant to use the thinner 6ply Keller shells there's no need to be. They sound fantastic! The worst thing about being so happy with them is now my Ayotte Custom Bop Kit that cost me 5 times as much nineteen years ago as this Keller Kit is probably gonna hit ebay.
