It's been a weird season gig-wise: pretty slow for the most part, with an odd mix of big concerts and cheesy tuxedo gigs. There's never any middle ground in this biz, from my experience.
That was the reason I gave up drumming as a full time job in 1980. I was making it financially in music but aviation provided stability for my family. I missed full time gigging but managed to to do a lot of weekend work and not having to worry about slow times in music made the flying enjoyable. Now my children are grown and I retired when my wife passed away so now its time to think about full time drumming. Looks like I am back where I started in 1966, drummer looking for work. |

It went really well - actually I ended up getting a lot of camera time, since I was right behind Clarence, and they also had a camera rigged up on one of the overhead mic stands. Tom Arnold is the host of the show, and he was EXTREMELY cool, and made it a point to talk to each of us individually. He couldn't wait to tell me that he is a drummer too - "I've got this great set of DW's at home, man..." - and he treated us all with total hospitality. They built us a stage right outside the Fox studio, with a street set used for NYPD Blue right behind us - pretty cool. Staff members from his show took us into the control room, where we watched his director controlling 12 different cameras with hand gestures and spoken commands - it was like watching somebody conduct an orchestra! Michael Irvin came off the set and hung out with me and the fiddle player during one of the breaks, another extremely cool guy. They provided me an excellent kit - the best-sounding set of Yamaha Maple Customs that I've ever played, with my choice of 3 snares. I went with a Yamaha 6.25x14 Paul Leim signature snare that sounded and looked great. As a backup I chose a Yamaha 14" brass piccolo, but the third choice sounded great too - a 5x14 Maple Custom. I used all my own Sabian cymbals, and I was very happy with how they sounded in the final production. All in all it was a great experience - but now it's back to the grind. My gigs this weekend are tuxedo-clad follow-the-sequencer affairs.  |

I'm not usually a fan of MC's - they're nice, but a little too controlled for my tastes. Although I admit, they're a sound man's dream. This one had a fresh set of heads, and it was sweeeeeeeeeeeeet! And we were outdoors - I bet they'd have KILLED on an inside stage. Very impressive. |

I'm depressed...
I was supposed to be touring in Tahiti, Hawaii and Australia the entire month of January. But thanks to the Bali bombing, promoters got skittish and cancelled the entire tour. Their reasoning is that there will be little to no tourists this winter because of the fear of terrorism. No tourists, no audience. The other thing is the expectations of an attack on Iraq. Everyone's scared so the damned thing got cancelled. I'm so pissed.

I'm assuming you meant my Canada AM gig- Thanks for asking Felix. It was awesome!!! What a buzz. The national coverage is cool because it aires throughout the day with the different time zones.....so it was cool getting calls from friends/family across the country in a steady Western direction as the day wore on. We've been invited to the main studio in Toronto to do another live performance....can't pass up publicity like Canada A.M. 20 hours after the TV gig we finished our last set three provinces away. Every day should be like that. |

I was going to be living vicariously through you on the tour, so I'm pretty bummed as well. Still looking for my "dream" band, or, any band ?! Gosh. Thanks, Felix. I missed you too . D**n job, keeps getting in the way of me having a fun day! Just was checking out a band to audition for, but they seem to be headed in the direction of "Grateful Dead" tribute band. I've been told any number of times that I look like Jerry Garcia, but I've never been a "Dead Head" so it looks like this will be a "Dead End".  My search for a band continues...... |

I don't want to turn this into a sniper thread, but being from the Washington area, I thought you all may be interested to know that there was a palpable sigh of relief when they picked up those 2 guys and the general feeling of the area has relaxed tremendously. I never thought things like that would affect me as much as this episode did, not immediately, but after about 10-15 days of it. It was actually a new point of stress of which I need no more in my life. The original thread was about gigging. I'm not right now, that's enough of a stress. It's nice to have my point of stress being as trivial as not gigging instead of something much more serious. |

My band, The Quivers, will be playing a return appearance on a local cable show in a few weeks. We're also hosting a CD release party on New Years Eve at a club in our town, Jackson Michigan, for our new disc, that will be recorded for the internet radio show, "Sonic Chronicles". We play a return gig in January at a local CD shop, that also will be recorded for a "Sonic Chronicles" show. We're also planning a return visit to "The Mitch Albom Show", a nationally syndicated radio show based in Detroit, after the new year. My band, 3 Peace, is playing at the Texas City Tavern in Texas City, TX tonight, Friday, December 6th from 9:30 pm until 1:30 am and tomorrow from 5:00 pm until 8:30 pm for a biker toy run, then again from 9:30 pm until 1:30 am for a regularly scheduled gig. Not looking forward to waking up on Sunday. lmao  |
