Derek is a drummer, percussionist and songwriter who was born in Rhodesia. A country today known as Zimbabwe. During a professional music career spanning more than 30 years, he has been acclaimed as one of the leading performing artists on Sabian Cymbals, Pearl drums, Rim Shot Sticks and Remo Skins. During his 20 years as a professional drummer, he has played an integral role in helping bands like, "'Savuka" earn 11 Gold LP's in nine countries. Their music has been featured in several movies, most notably "'Rain Man" and "George of the Jungle".

In 1997 he conceived the ideas of developing an artistic educational program for Canadian school children featuring ethnic African beat - a concept Derek refers to as a "rhythm safari". As time has progressed. his ingenious performance has reached the ears of corporations that also are using Derek as an entertainer and motivational speaker at company events.
