Hi, first post here...looks like a great forum.
First off, I'm not a drummer. I'm a composer and music producer who plays keyboard, guitar and bass. I program most of my drum parts unless the budget is big enough to handle a live drummer, and I have a Pro Tools studio in my home.
One of my jobs is doing covers for a company that hires me for this. Every week I cover anything from the hardest rock to Jimmy Buffet to Beatles to you name it. Lately, it seems like I've been running up against some vibes in the drum tracks that I just can't figure out. I know they are simple, and someone who is a real drummer or percussionist could listen to this stuff and say, "Oh that's just this..." but I am feeling very frustrated at the moment over a song I'm covering this week. It's a new one by Tori Amos, and it's a live drummer on the track. I'd like to know if someone out there would be willing to allow me to EMAIL them an mp3 of this track so you could help me figure out what exactly is being played by the hi hat and the percussion. The hat seems to be placed somewhere about half left in the stereo picture, and SEEMS to be playing pretty much on the beat. Then, percussion comes in on the right. I cannot figure out what this is. It sounds like a cabasa, and maybe something else. I tried using cabasa and playing it with just fingers so I could play the little pattern that's going on, but that on playback the cabasa seems a little too tight. It sounds like something else, maybe an egg shaker, is with it on the track. But adding those makes what I'm doing sound sloppy (probably because...I'm not a percussionist;__ Anyway, this is a sound that one hears a lot, and I just wondered if someone could help me out here.....thanks so much.
