A drummer here in town seriously injured his eye hitting it with a drum stick while in mid-show.
The space between the cornea and lens filled up with blood and he completely lost vision. The doctors say with time the blood will be absorbed and he will gain his sight back, but it was a close thing.

Well I will definately reconsider learning to twirl sticks. Did he just lose grip or what?

In the middle of a MArching Band show, the snare drummers did a visual where we used high sticking. Well, mine was a little TOO high. Hit me in the nose, broke it, blood. Luckily, There were not stains on my uniform (black) and some on the drum head, most of the blood went on the harness.

NOT a fun night. Actually, the night was awesome..... once my nose stopped gushing.

Also had a cymbal fall on mde during a jazz show and hurt... thankfully no blood.

Only even hit myself in the wrist, and boy did that hurt, I had a big red line across my wrist for ages, would have been worse but i was wearing Ahead drum gloves, and it still left that mark....
My teacher once told me of how he hit his crash cymbal at a gig and the stick snapped in half, the top half flew straight across the stage and hit the singer in the back of the head, and apparently made her feel very dizzy and she nearly fell off the stage. Sounds funny, but what would have happened if it was worse?

I've never injured my eye, but I f*cking annihilated my thumbnail once. I was practicing, playing along to some speedy metal song, and I just came right on to it and it got pinned between the stick and the metal rim of the snare drum. Was it black? You better beleive it. Did it hurt? You're @$%# right it hurt. Did I have to drain the blackened, thick blood out from a hole that I made myself in the nail several months later? That is exactly what I had to do. Not a fond memory.

I've popped myself on the nose a couple times over the years, hard enough to make my eyes water....

One fun memory of my marching days was when I was playing tenor drums while wearing a ring.  I had the drums (nice heavy Ludwigs) flipped up in the resting position & dropped them quickly. Unfortunately my ring got hung up on the rim of the #1 drum & gave it a nice little pull as the drums went down. Ouch.

I guess every drummer's had his/her share of "stick-in-the-eye" (or anywhere else on the face for that matter) I hit my head pretty hard once,it swelled up for a whole day, and then once I sort of hooked my mouth with the tip as I was singing along with the song. The last time my friend came around to jam, I wasn't wearing any gloves, so the stick flew off and bashed him right in the head, but that's all the damage I've done while playing, nothing too serious Smiley

Bottom line:  nothing ... NOTHING ... scares me more than the loss of my sight.  Even ahead of loss of hearing.  Once it's lost, it's lost.  It seems to me that adequate protection (ear and eye) while drumming is only logical.  Same as weedeating, mowing, operating a chain saw, etcetera.
