Hola everyone,
Can someone point me to a source for unbleached, high-quality skins? On the thick side . . . I'm having a problem with overtones and ringing on my congas. Just need one set for congas and maybe one or two skins for some other African drums I'm restoring. Not Asian water buffalo obviously, but real calf / cow / steer from the Americas. If you want to keep it low-key for some reason, just send me a personal message. Thanks!
Some people have said use a thinner skin on a tumba and a thicker skin on a quinto . . . I've also heard it the opposite way. Is there any general rule, or just personal preference?

Thanks b-cero. I looked at Rhythym Traders earlier, actually about a year ago when I was searching for a djembe. According to their site, their steer conga skins "2mm-2.5mm thick"--pretty thin. I'm looking for 4 - 5 mm ;-)

Since that is a bit thicker than the usual I would contact the various drum makers and sellers (that use cow) and see if they have what you need, they may have set aside some thicker skins that came with their bulk orders. Try contacting Isla, Mambiza, (DW)gon bops, resolution, fat, timba, volcano, etc. good luck!.

Good idea. I did talk with Isla and they do have some skins available for around $35. No response from Fat. I've owned some Volcano skins in the past--beautiful, not sure if they sell skins only though. If I can avoid the overhead of shipping skins from Texas to Hawaii and back, I probably will. Need to call Timba again; thought they had closed for good, now it's unclear.
