Hi all,
I've decided to return to my roots somewhat.
The last time I toured was 15 years ago!
The last time I played venues of this size was probably 20 years ago.
But I've agreed to help some old friends out on their summer US & Canada tour.
www.worldparty.net
Only half of the tour has been anounced so far. Dates below.....
It would be great to see a few Cafe members at some of the shows. I believe the band traditionally do signing sessions and meet and greets after their shows. I'm not sure whether that's still on the cards for this tour. More later on that.
Speaking of which, I plan to keep the Cafe posted about the rehearsal and touring process.
I've spent the last few weeks learning the World Party material, researching and buying some new gear and making travel plans.
Gearwise, I've ordered a new Noble & Cooley kit. I've re-established my endorsements with Zildjian and Evans and I've had my ears fitted for Etymotic -20db musicians earplugs.
Here are the confirmed dates so far.

Allright Chris!  It sounds like you're excited to hit the road again after so many years.  I'm looking forward to your journals.

I don't see a Phoenix date, but if that changes, I'll be there.  I've been reliving the 80's lately and seeing World Party would be a blast!

Cool news! I might be able to see the show at the Fillmore, S.F.!

Good of you to post notes as the tour progresses. I'll definitely be interested, and look forward to hearing how it's going.

Nice going on the Noble Cooley kit! Hopefully you'll be able to post some pix.

Will you be traveling in a bus? The itinerary looks like you'll be covering some miles, but doable by bus.

Have you met all of the bandmates? I really like your attitude of making things "safe" for the other musicians... I'm sure they'll be very happy with you!

Best wishes for a great tour!  Smiley

Congratulations Chris!

I look forward to hearing your anecdotes about the entire experience.  I hear World Party all the time on XM radio and the music is great.  Hopefully you'll be able to post pics of your new drum kit when it comes in.

I'm really ticked off because your closest gigs coincide exactly with the start of my next school year (I'm a teacher) and I probably won't be able to make a show.   Angry

Well, congratulations again on the tour.  Hopefully you've been practicing your fills and syncopations and will be in tip-top playing shape!   Wink

LOL.
If you want to see a drummer play with no syncopations, or very few, I'm your guy.  Grin
Regarding the tour schedule, it's my understanding that there a lot more shows to be announced. Like anything in the music biz, that could change for the worst, but I've been asked to free my diary until the 1st October.
I surely would love to hit Florida, Phoenix and Chicago. You might see there are a few holes in the current schedule.  Wink
In all my years touring The States, I've never once visited Colorado, so I'm looking forward to that.
More later.....

My biggest concern today is taking delivery of my new earplugs.
I went into the audiologist with several recommendations from other drummers for the Etymotic -15db plugs.
However, she absolutely insisted on the -20db for me.
It was hard for me to argue against, as I already exhibit some hearing damage and tinnitus.
I was relieved to find out she wasn't too concerned about my hearing loss so far, around average or slightly worse than average for a man of my age she said. However, she stressed the tinnitus was a major warning and I could severely damage my ears over the next few years.
So -20db it is.
I'm not sure how that's going to effect my drumming dynamics, or my ability to interact with the other musicians.  Huh
That's life I guess.......and more to the point, that's life as a pro musician. These hurdles are sent for us to overcome.
Karl Wallinger is basically The World Party. The other musicians in the band are called in for the occasional recording session, but mostly for touring. I've done the odd session for Karl, but not worked with any of his band before.
Who knows how the playing and personality dynamics will play out?

It should be fine. I use the bog-standard (non-moulded) ER20 in rehearsal, and think they're fantastic. They really do have near-flat attenuation across the frequency range, so things get quieter but not muffled or soggy. Everything is still crisp. I can still have conversations, and can still lock in. Just make sure you put them in perhaps 30min before downbeat and you'll be fine.

Hey Chris, that's great news!  I sure hope you guys hit Utah.  Yeah, I know it's the land of fruits and nu.....wait, that's another state.  Regardless, it's not the most popular state, but they get their fair share of top acts at some cool venues.

I haven't visited my mom in a while so maybe I can catch your Alexandria/Charlottesville dates if all else fails.

Hey Jeepn,
I'm guessing no Utah, as the schedule is pretty filled out on the wetsern side of the US. After California the band seems to be headed east via Colorado.
Two shows in Virginia seems quite unusual to me. I don't think I've ever played there before. Is DC really spreading out?

I don't think I can swing the Boulder, CO event.  I'm flying in from Asia on that day and won't be in any condition to make the 10-hour drive from Utah.

Yes, DC started spreading out in the early '70s.  Smiley

I grew up in Northern Virginia, which is one of the most wealthy areas in the country and now probably one of the most diverse.  I visited a couple of years ago for my dad's funeral and it felt like I was in another country.

Charlottesville is a university town (UVA) not too far from DC.  It's where Dave Matthews got his musical start and the home base of former(?) cafe member Drumgun (Tonic, Zoo Story).

I'll see you at the House of Blues the 25th next month.

My friend has box seats there.  It's always an awesome party when we do the House of Blues.

It will be cool to say "hey" there if possible.  My buddy has a pass to the "foundations room" so you and your friends could party up there if you wanted afterwords.  Roll Eyes  Grin  Lips Sealed I think the rockstars have full run of the place anyways.

See you there!  Smiley
My itinerary say's 7:00pm - Early show!. That's a bit of a worry.
People are still getting home from work then, rock musicians are just having breakfast.
Anyway, as for partying, don't expect too much from a 47 yr old.  Lips Sealed Wink

Don't tell anyone in South Carolina I said this, but Colorado is the most beautiful state in the Union. Nothing else comes close in my book.

Regarding the early show in Cleveland, I see JURASSIC 5 are the meat in the sandwich - the late show.
