It's not too late to get better!

Just listened to "Blue Sky" again after so many years.  I always loved that song but never really paid attention to the groove.  Cool side note by the way: it was written by Dicky Betts for a girlfriend ''Blue Sky'' was the English translation of her Chippewa name.  Anyway, after this listening I really really really like the groove.  It's not straight, it is just so slightly swung but not enough to be a shuffle - at least according to my limited vocabulary.  The swung feel really comes out nicely right after that cool guitar hook leading into the verse.  I know other's have done similar stuff but listen to it again and tell me what you think.  Also, if some of the pros have a proper description of the groove (Bart, Mr A. etc.....)  And to top it off, there are two drummers laying it down - awesome.

That is a nice old groove. Reminds of my high school days in Florida..... Grin

The term 'slightly swung' is very accurate. I've really enjoyed Stanton Moore explaining how a 'swung feel' can differ and that there is a 'sweet spot' for grooves that is just as you described it - close to straight but slightly swung. Masters of New Orleans style playing ooze this inbetween-feeling groove and I am always working on it to make it feel better.

Some of the old rock and roll recordings had this approach (unintentionally I believe).

IMHO, FWIW, etc.

Interesting question, and thanks for the background on the song. I didn't know that. I've always loved that song too--makes me think of high school...
