If everything goes as "planned", I've got my first drumming gig coming up in front of a crowd of about 300, and I'm scared stickless!

Let us pray.

WarrenPeese,

as you said...let us pray:

Our Bonham, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy beat.
Thy groovith come.
Thy time be kept,
On stage as it was in rehearsal.
Give us this night our righteous chops.
And forgive us our tempos,
As we forgive those who syncopate against us.
And lead us not into atonality,
But deliver us from arrhythmia.
For thine is the beat,
and the power,
and the pocket,
for three 45 minute sets.
Amen

I am pretty sure I will be struck dead by lightening...Bob

Oh, that's funny!! I will keep that in mind on 8/13, when I play my very first time in front of actual people at church. Shocked

Just think of all those people as your best friends. People you've known all your life. When you stop laughing, play to the best of your ability and you'll  do just fine. Remember your not the only one on that stage. If all else fails and a mistake is made, point at one of the other guys and say, Hey watch  what your doing these are friends of mine and your making me look bad. Ya,Ya,Ya, you're going to be just fine.Good luck amd lets hear from you after the gig.

(in Spinal Tap voice)

You could ask how much more dead could Bonham be? and the answer would be none. None more dead.

RFD, that prayer is getting printed and taped to the top rod of my hi hat stand, and Terry, that's the best advice ever. I will buy a brick of cheap sticks for throwing at anyone who dares take notice of any hiccups. Maybe I should get two bricks.

Chances are the audience will be made up of whitebread executive types who, after 2 beers - out of bottles with napkins wrapped around them, of course -  will scream out for "Brandy" ( by Looking Glass), or something by 3 Dog Night. They'll never notice any timing stumbles, I'm sure.

I'm just psyching myself up.

Some idiot will probably yell for Freebird.  At that point, play if from the CD and take a break.  Smiley

You'll do fine.  Have fun with it.

If they're all white collars, chances are not many of them are musicians anyway (maybe hobbist but unlikely any serious ones) so the chances of them noticing a fluff here and there is unlikely.
Just have fun with it.

I agree with the 'not noticing fluff' part, but not the 'white collar' part.   There are serious musicians in all walks of life.

Remember this: your audience wants you to succeed. They want you to sound good, and want to be entertained. They're not looking to find fault with you; they're looking to ENJOY you.

So don't forget to have FUN - after all, drumming is supposed to be more fun than not drumming!

Thanks guys. I know it may be corny but I do derive a lot of confidence from your feedback - even the humorous stuff. Sometimes especially the humorous stuff.

I think after the first song I'll relax and be able to do as Mr. A says - just have fun. I love playing, so I just need to let it happen and forget that there are 300 drunks dancing like Steve Martin in The Jerk.

Thanks again.

Excellent point, Dave!

As a matter of fact, the singer and keyboard player are attorneys, the bass player is a dentist, the guitar player is some sort of engineer and the drummer I'm replacing for the gig is a utilities engineer. All middle aged white collar dudes who can successfully cover SRV to James Brown. I'll be the only non-professional by trade in the bunch!

Now I'm nervous again.

This is outstanding advice. MA = Tony Robbins for drummers!

We like to spot people dancing as badly as Elaine in Seinfeld.  Anyone who sees that on the dancefloor signals the others in the band with the "thumb over the shoulder" motion.

Yeah, if there's alcohol you've got nothing to worry about. After the first twenty minutes the only people watching you will be one or two lonely dudes who don't mix well at parties. Everyone else will be drinking and saying things to each other that they'll be ashamed of back at work.

I'm pretty sure Bonham is still dead.

Not true...I recently ran into him, Hendrix, Joplin, and Elvis at Home Depot buying pressure treated lumber.  The King said they're sharing a small rancher over in Tacoma Park Maryland and were putting on a deck this weekend.  I'll keep everyone posted.
Onto the gig...you've got some really good advice however I'll share with you one of my early "issues" when gigging.  I used to get this major adreneline thing going.  This is of course natural and with experience will subside, but just make sure it doesn't affect your tempo when you hit the stage.  The main thing is to relax and enjoy yourself...you'll be fine.

If you see Hendrix again, remind him he owes me $20. . .  from that thing, at the place, with the guy.  Thanks, man.
