give the drummer some!

I tend to like to change my heads quite often maybe every 2 months for the snare 6 months for the toms. Anywho I was noticing that my new pork pie snare wasn't sounding as good as it was when i got it 6 months ago I realized I hadn't changed the stock reso head so I went and got a new reso head today popped it on and still wasn't satisfied, I was getting alot of odd overtones and even when i cracked the snare dead center i got rolling buzzes. I then tuned up the top head and found all the lugs went down evenly with a drumdial, except for one that had to be cranked down much more than the others to get that part of the head up to equal tension. I realized that the part of the head that had this deviation was right where i hit the back beat and that since lugs come loose alot in that area i tennd to tighten them down inbetween songs and probably have tigntened it down one too many times.

basically my question is, if there is a deviation in the head where one part of the head is stretched out farther than the othersides is it time to get a new head. Should I stick it out or sacrifice my coffee and subway sandwhiches for a week and get another head. Also I noticed on the snare wire when the wire was untensioned 2 of the outter wires kinda had more slack than the others, is this thing done too?

Yeah, I would replace both.  Prob. just the head first and see if that satisfies you.  But then again, we're drummers and are rarely satisfied Grin

Seriously, I would swap the head.  I have had wires bust, and I just snip 'em off and keep going.  But I use 40s and 42s so 1 or 2 wires missin aint gonna make a huge difference.  If you are using 12 strands or sumthin-that could make a diff. I suppose.........

Sooooo.......buy the head, coffee, and the daily special Subway sando and contemplate the wires Grin

I went by guitar center and grabbed a head, they give me a good discount at gutiar center these days so i got the coated emperor 9 dollars out the door. I'm going to put it on later tonight, as far as the wires go I have puresound blasters on there, they're probably 6 or 7 months old, maybe 8 at the most, I keep my wires pretty loose and i keep them straight. We'll see tonight.
