Anybody have any experience with these? I'm looking for a new kit and I have a soft spot in my heart for tama because of an old tama wood snare I had that was amazing.
Another thing is the difference between 100% birch and maple, I'm finding it hard to justify paying and extra $1500 for maple. Is maple really worth that amount of money? I know it's all what sounds good to you but what are the pro's and cons?

Oh, and has anyone seen the new Starclassic "neo retro" kit?!! They only made 40 of them but I asked my local shop if they could get a hold of one. These things look amazing! http://www.tama.com/drums/new.asp?p=7

Just another thing to add...there's more than just the birch vs. maple option with the Starclassic line. I'm a Tama loyalist myself, currently playing Rockstar Customs, and my next kit WILL be Starclassics. I've been looking at the Starclassic Performer B/B kit. The shells are 4 plys of birch (5 in the kick) with 3 inner plys of bubinga. I know that bubinga seems to be the "wood de jour", but I've played a couple bubinga kits, and they sound beautiful!!!! If you do decide to go with this kit...can I come over and play them

Where are you finding the bubinga with birch shells? I thought they only had the bubinga with maple. That would be awesome if they had a cheaper bubinga kit with birch, I would buy that in a second. And yes you can come over and play them.

Hmm they seem to be only available in europe. They aren't on the american tama site but if you go to www.tamadrum.co.jp you can find them there.

They're available here in Canada. I was just on Tama's US site, and you're right, I can't find them. Weird!

I can't comment on the B/B kits, but I own a Starclassic Performer in Red Sparkle Fade, and it is a great kit. I like the sound of these drums, and the finish is superb. On top of that, what Tama hardware I own seems sturdy.

One thing I do like about the new moutning system (aside from being plated to match the hardware) is they allow the toms to be positioned alot closer together. On my Rockstar Customs, the little knobies on my mounting system get in the way of positioning my toms the way I like them. So, kutos to Tama for fixing that

True but I am just nervous they won't be as tough as the old ones. The Rockstar mounts where a bit of a pain too because they didn't mold them in to the hoops like the new superstars and starclassics. But its Tama and they are known for having bad ass tough gear!
My experience so far has been that the new mounts are every bit as tough as the old ones. I have the old ones on a Starclassic birch kit and the new ones on my Starclassic bubinga kit. That being said, the old mounts certainly do have more of an industrial, "tough" look to them.

Thanks for the "offer", doomed, but I think I'll keep them here in California! I asked them and they said Canada was too cold.
