I'm trying to find a way for my band to communicate between us without using emails. These are coming in and out like crazy and it's way too much.
I'm thinking of a private discussion board or maybe a blog... Something very simple we all can access and is simple to configure.
Do you guys have any solutions? Thanks.

How about by telephone?
Seriously...
My bandmates are notoriously slow at returning email. If I need to communicate with them, I grab the trusty ol' phone.

Use a phone, like Ryno said. E-mails, boards and blogs are impersonal, and impractical when discussing serious band issues, since you don't get immediate feedback. If there is a distance situation, and the computer is the only way to go, why not using a messenger service (MSN, Yahoo, etc.), where you can have a better type of "conversation" then e-mails?
I would limit the e-mail usage to announce or remind future gigs and rehearsals.

Yahoo groups is the way the go (I'm sure there are others but I don't have time to compare em all). It's free, has a calendar, a place for photos and files and you can email the whole group directly from the group site. Each of you need a yahoo acount (again free) but you can use your regular email or the yahoo email for notices. I belong to about 5 yahoo groups, one for our band, one for my church music team, etc..... It's a good way to stay in touch.

Yahoo groups is the way the go Agreed. I use it for two things: 1. stay in touch with my bandmates 2. as a mailing list to warn people about our next gig or any other information. Free, easy to use, easy to configure. |

I would say either e-mail or phone.... if e-mail is to crazy, try to set up an organized way of phoning each other.......I'm assuming you mean to set up practices and such.

One more thought in addition to the yahoo group. If each of you have a cell phone, you setup a email group that sends text messages to each member. If you are a cingular customer, email address is something like phonenumber@mobile.mycingular.com. Check with yoru carrier. Send an email notice these addresses and instead of clogging everyone's email inbox, you'll clog your cell phone get text messages on your cell phones. |

My big band leader uses email for most communications. Saves a lot of phone calling, and everyone knows to check their mail for news. For a band of 20 it's a lot easier than trying to maintain an online group, especially when some folks are only temporary.
My rock band, on the other hand, communicates through a Google group. We also maintain a calendar in Gmail, with a shared account, so that the guys booking the band can easily see when individuals are not available.
I'm playing in two permanent bands as well as in the house band for a weekly jam, and also freelance with various groups. I couldn't do it without the Internet. I even have one bandleader who checks the calendar of gigs on my website for my availability before calling me for a gig. I update that calendar as soon as anything new happens.

I suggest two things. One being How about you all move in together. That way you will always be together. But seriously, that could very well tear a band up, and makes no sense. So what about Myspace? Most bands have myspace pages out there already, If you dont you should get one, theyre great! That way you can message all the band mates seperatly. But yahoo groups works just as well.
With my band we email. And i agree, its frusterating at times. People dont respond in time, and when they do its hard to see how they feel about some things.
