I find that using slide technique generally works better with socks. However, you can easily do both heel toe and slide with or without shoes.

I'm a no shoes kinda dude. I guess it's because of all the practicing I did around the house in my youth. I CAN play with shoes, but I feel more "one" with the drums without em. gotta have socks though. white ones.

Old thread, but I thought I'd continue when I searched and found it.
I always found it odd when I saw drummers play barefoot. I figured - that Can't be the optimal way.
Tonight, I played barefoot for the first time - with socks on. I Love it, and I seem to be playing with less effort this way.
I doubt I can gig this way, but ...

I've always liked playing in socks. Not NEW socks, mind you, because they can get a bit slippery. Socks that are worn in have a little grip.
I also empty my pockets, placing my keys and wallet in one shoe, and usually whatever I'm drinking in the other. They make handy cupholders when you're not wearing them!

I've played both with shoes and just with socks. The shoes win....No more will I play in just socks. I can't take the gripping from my wife because of holes in my socks.  |

So, I may be a little different. Generally, I rehearse barefooted or with just socks. For gigs, I wear my DrumShoes by DB. If you try them for a gig, you'll be "soled" for life. LMAO! Seriously though...check 'em out. http://www.drumshoes.com/Brent |

I can play in pretty much anything. I'm partial to my Converse allstars and my wrestling shoes. Barefoot is nice too.

Hmm, seems like a lot of people love Chuck Taylors... myself, I go barefoot. Have been doing so since I rushed for my lesson once and accidentally left in slippers, which I couldn't play in, so I kicked them off and played barefoot. I liked the feel enough to go barefoot since.
All that might change if I get the Iron Cobra I'm eyeing.

I used to play with my tennies on, when I started off on my Mapex pedal.. but then after I got my Iron Cobras, I wanted to feel the weight of the pedal so I got them off... I played barefoot in a couple of gigs, and then realised its a bad idea on THAT pedal coz of the embossing... it hurt. Now I play with my socks on... and im quite comfortable even while playing fast doubles using heel toe...

I bought the first pair of Chuck Taylors the other day and I know why people like them, they are stiff, Flat and feel almost bare foot. I may stick with them. Bare foot and Iron Cobras are kinda rough and if I play bare foot the balls of my feet get brused. Nutty |

I believe its illegal in Kansas? to play drums barefooted. Maybe its Toledo Ohio?. Anyway me gottsta have me Doc Martins or some Sketchers on, um, socks to. I dont see how Dave Weckl can play in those thin tap dancing shoes of his either.

I prefer to play with bare feet or socks when I'm alone. But I have a pair of Asics wrestling shoes and Adidas Samba indoor soccer shoes. I honestly like the indoor soccer shoes a lot better  |

My thing about shoes is this - I don't wear gloves when I drum because I like the feel and the nuance of sticks in my bare hands. Same with my feet. That was my take on the matter for a number of years. Then I started getting calls to play with reggae bands. A very large blister formed in the first set of one gig. I don't play barefoot any more. |

I play drums most often in my socks, but only because thats what I mostly wear at home. I havent found playing in shoes or bare feet makes a noticable difference to my playing.
the only thing Ive found I cant play in is my slippers, because they move on my feet too much.

98% of the time I'll play in socks because I like having that foot-to-pedal contact...minus the callouses of playing barefoot on an Iron Cobra. I find it easier to play the bassdrum the less I have on my feet. I also wear really loose skate shoes so it kinda makes my bassdrum playing a little sluggish.

I like playin in socks cause it allows my foot to slide more and more elgible of doing the heel toe technique better. But I think that's because I have the old Gibraltar double bass pedal with the smooth surface unlike other pedals. I lean more towards shoes when I'm looking for more of power and punch in songs. And if on a gig, I like using a shoe with a smooth underside like leathe shoes, or the highly recommended Puma atheletic shoes.
