Not Kentucky,
Only Federal or State buildings.
You may want to double check that!  I did a little research at work on our TTY terminal and this is the response I received from Kentucky.

Prohibited Places to Carry- police station, prisons, courthouses, government buildings, bars, schools, daycare facilities, airports, churches,

FYI Oklahoma recognizes KY permits but KY does not recognize ours.

I knew about the every thing but the bars.  I have never seen them check.
They are there and every where else.  I think the crooks need to be worried. Anyway, back to the regularly scheduled Thread, No I don't let many people play my drums.  If one of you all see me playing some where
identify your self with your cafe name  and I will have to make a decission.
I would let most of you play them!! He He He! Grin Cheesy Cool Wink

I would hope that if the Virginia Tech. thing was here, the guy wouldn't have made it past the 2nd Trigger pull. I can't believe with all those healthy college kids, no one tried to take him down.
This topic was way more fun when it was about drum kits, not about guns, mace or acts of violence.  Undecided

There have been plenty of times where I've been at a bar with a live band and I've been tempted to approach the drummer and ask to sit in, but again...I just think it's a little disrespectful to do with a total stranger.  So I don't even ask.
Yes, this is the heart of the matter for me.
It doesn't occur to me to 'sit in' when I go see a band. If I had the opportunity to play someone else's kit, I would treat it with respect and play less hard than I do on my own gear.
The onus is on the guest. It's up to us drummers to leave our sticks at home when we go out to see a band, ask permission first if you MUST have a play and treat other people's equipment with more respect than even our own.
I prefer these rules (or etiquette) to rules barring anyone from playing my drums.
I saw Vinnie Caliauta in concert this week.
His bass drum and snare were probably the best sounding I've ever heard in concert.
I would have loved to have played them myself so I could see how he had them set-up and tuned.
If that unlikely opportunity had arisen, I would have played fairly softly, one or two bars of time.....job done.
Not blasted into a monstrous groove and gestured to Nathan East and Herbie hancock to join in the jam.

OK........I can dream can't I?  Grin

I am also sorry.  I wanted to make sure there was no confusion that could get someone in trouble.  Just for the record I have lots more music equipment than I do guns.   Grin

I don't think they had time, Nutty. He was shooting too fast. There was one prof who died b/c he was blocking a door that the gunman was trying to come thru, so his students could get out thru the window.

There's a real hero for you. He was a Holocaust survivor too.

This all really bugged me. I went to school at Tech my first 2 years in college. Lived in West AJ my 2nd year, graduated from the same high school as one of the girls who was killed.  Just too close to home. Sad

back to the original topic (sorta)

i am (soon to be was) one of the 'i used to play drums' guys. in my case, i studied piano for 10 years, played trumpet for 2 and learned drums so i could join my brother and his friend in a band. while it didnt 'go anywhere' we played together for 10 years (started in jr high). when life happened (getting married, moving away that kind of thing) and the band splintered i found myself not practicing. it had all been practicing the band stuff. NOW at my work there is a new kid (19 ish) who plays. we started talking about drum equipment and whatnot. it lit a fire. im now looking to buy a new kit. NOT to be in a band, but to practice the rudiments, and see what i can become. (i found myself talking about a drum teacher i had who had sheet music that had 9 bars of 23/16...and while i still cant quite rap my head around it [i get the math/theory...i just cant hear it in my head] im excited to try it...it's kinda my own personal sound barrier. that and actually making a 3/3 time signature...almost works in theory, but in practice it turns into 9/8).

sorry...kinda went off the deep end there.

so, while i respect the op's position of not letting people use his kit (i wouldnt even let my friends use mine) keep in mind that you might have an opportunity to stoke a dying fire. (although you may be able to do that WITHOUT letting them play your kit. heck it happened for me by TALKING).

That's what it all boils down to for me as well.

Not to sound like a snob or anything, but if I'm playing a gig, I frankly could care less if someone comes up to me during my break and says "hey, I play drums too!"  If that happens, I'll usually just say "hey, great!" shake his hand and politely say I have to go.

When I'm at a club or function with a live band, I just assume that the drummer feels the same way, so I leave him alone.  It's HIS gig, not mine.  If I like his playing, I'll just go up to him and say "hey, I really enjoyed your playing", shake his hand and give him his space.  I don't even mention the fact that I'm a drummer.

I don't think I have ever asked to sit in on someone elses show but I have been asked if I would like to play a few songs if they knew me.
I agree with being respectful.
