blegh.

I came down with a cold/allergy/asthma/bronchial thing again, which always bums me out, coz you never know how deep into the chest it'll go.

in any event, I'm really tired of getting these things, and ready for something different. I have tried a range of holistic stuff over the years, like acupuncture and what-not, but the effects have been fleeting.

yesterday I was reading up on some traditional chinese medicine stuff, and they repeatedly point to sugar being a big culprit in most allergic and/or respiratory ailments. supposedly, sugar weakens your spleen, liver and ultimately, lungs.

I am a huuuuuge sugar fiend [7 packets in my 'joe], so I figured I should try it. gotta say, I feel a degree of relief, though I also took a ton of meds yesterday, so it's hard to say what really worked. but I am making a real effort to detox on the sweets and white flour front, in hopes it'll afford me some benefit. it's really hard, though, man. I live across the street from a little bread shoppe, and can easily wuff down an entire cinnamon raisin loaf in one sitting. bad, bad, bad!

we'll see how long it lasts...sugar is not something I'm really ready to part ways with, but I also have to think long term, coz for the past 35 years, I've been put on stronger meds at higher dosages. I just don't want to live my life like that.

have any of you successfully curtailed your sugar intake? do you miss it?

I'm on the other end of the spectrum - about 6 years ago I stopped drinking (I was a heavy drinker) and sugar became my replacement for the alcohol. I eat about 2 dozen cookies a day now. I also eat those little chocolate donuts a bag at a time. And I'm not fat, because I smoke cigarettes. Obviously, I don't take very good care of myself, but I haven't been sick in years. Not even a cold.

My theory is, I don't get sick because I have very, very little stress in my life.

Unfortunately, I do like my sweets.  Sitting at a computer all day doesn't help, either.  We have a convenience store right next to our office, and I slip over there way too often (at least once a day... sometimes two) to get something sweet.  My downfall is chocolate, but I will go for a sweetroll or cookies just as easily.  On the bright side, I just got a full blood work-up, and the results look good.  total cholesterol numbers were a bit high, but overall I'm in good shape. I try to stay active, so I'm not just a big blob.  I know that I would be SO much healthier if I cut sugar and processed flour out of my diet, but they make it far too easy.  At home we use artificial sweetners, but who knows what those things are doing to us, long term Roll Eyes

Sugar is a favorite of mine!

I've cut down a lot by not eating as many sweets (pastry is my true downfall).  I've still managed to put on just about all of the weight I lost in the last year or so which is bumming me out, but I think this has more to do with inactivity than with sugar intake.  I won't complain about being able to work at home, but when I worked at the office I used to take a 1/2 walk every day at lunch.  I've gotten out of that habit, unfortunately.

I used to watch my grandmother put spoonful after spoonful of sugar into her coffee, so I hereditarily blame her.  Wink

I am a chocoholic, big time! I recently have gotten tired of being 10# larger than I was 10 yrs ago, and finally have gotten motivated to get rid of it, with GREAT success! I'm now down 9# from about 3 mos ago, just by cutting out most of the sweets and getting my activity level up. It's staying off and it hasn't been hard. Notice that I said most sweets--I still indulge, but not as often (ie, 1-2 times a day instead of 4-5--but not this "1 time a week you can have a bite of chocolate" nonsense), and not as big of a piece. And the best part is, I really don't miss it, and I don't crave it like I used to!
So yes, I think you can beat it. I feel better, and am motivated by how much better I look, since the weight's come off everywhere, and not just in my butt. Grin
Stock up on fruits that you like, and eat less--get the smaller cinnamon roll instead of the big one, or eat half and put the other half in the freezer where you're less likely to see it and eat it. Eat enough protein, cause this keeps you fuller longer. And don't eat when you're not hungry--I've found as I pay attention to this, I'm really eating much less.

Unfortunately I am addicted to Pepsi. I can never get enough of it, and when I don't have one, I often find myself wishing I did. I used to drink two 52 oz. servings a day (yes, that is 104 oz. of Pepsi). My only justification for drinking so much soda is that when I go to 7-Eleven it only costs about 79 cents to refill the 52 oz. serving compared to $1.50 for a measly 24 oz. cold one! I know I have a problem and lately I have been drinking Diet Coke much more. Wish me luck with my problem.

Good luck. Roll Eyes
You're better off drinking regular soda than diet soda--nasty stuff. Try drinking water instead, and stop going to 7-11! Take a jug of water w/ you, and you'll save 79 cents every day. That's over $288 per year. You can buy yourself a pretty nice cymbal for that! Shocked

As a class #2 Diabetic for the past sixteen years I've learned to get along without a number of things. I drink the flavored water with natural flavor(no sugar, no Carbs.no sodium, etc) and ir's really great. When it comes to cake. pie, cookies, we have them made with splenda and after a short time you can't tell the difference. They have a large assortment of sugar free candies, but you still have to watch the carbs. Holiday time is a big selling time for all of the seasonal chocolate candies made this way and the rest of the year I rely on the hard suckers in fruit flavors. Sugar free just like the sugar free chough drops made by Halls. I run everything by my Doctor first and then I got with what ever she says.LOL

sugar isn't the really bad part, it's more the caffeine. It's mostly the thing that wreaks havoc. And while I am a sugar demon I don't get hyper like everyone else, rather, I slow down like I was on Depressents or something. But I am VERY active and I have a freakishly high metabolism which means it's never in my system for more then an hour or so.
Then again, that metabolism is also why I'm so skinny...In one end out the other....

Hello,

I have always been a junk food and sweets junkie due to my hypoglycemia.

I discovered recently that drinking both regular Oolong and decaffinated Green Tea with Splenda, really curbs my cravings for sweets and junk food.

Oolong tea is supposedly a fat burner and the Green tea's health benefit's are too numerous to mention.

I've noticed increased energy also.

You might want to give the teas a try.

Good luck,

Joe Jordan

Americans have a love! affair with sugar and im right there. Im hypoglycemic also and sugar is something to stay away from but its like going off heroin to me. This thread is going to inspire me to cut the sugar again. Read Adelle Davis's book sugar blues, it will show you the bad side of eating sweets and the list is endless. This little group therepy is good for me, its comforting in a way to know that im not alone.

wow, I totally forgot I'd posted this.

but I come bearing good news...

since doing this raw juice fast [2 weeks of nothing but raw organic fruit and vegetable juices, and lots of water], I have not had sugar cravings. I'm back to solid food again, but still drink 3-4 raw juices a day. I don't eat as much, either. I feel satisfied eating a normal amount, and I'm convinced it's because I'm getting the nutrients I have been needing, so I'm not craving nutrition in some empty way.

granted, fruit has sugar, but it's not heinous processed sugar, and it doesn't knock you out the way regular sugar or sugar/carb-loaded foods do. and while the jury's still out on whether organic is more nutritious than conventional fruit/veggies, I have always favored organic just coz I'm allergic to certain pesticides. plus it tastes better.

my energy is still up, and what's really crazy is I haven't had a cup of joe since I started this. no, wait. I did have one cup 2 weeks ago. only drank half, though. and used ONE packet of sugar.

all in all, I'm quite happy. and right now getting ready for my kale-spinach-broccoli-watercress-celery-ginger juice. that baby packs a wallop! Wink

give it a shot. I think it could really help the sugar monkeys amongst us.

Smoggrock, organic from every source ive ever read is superior to other fruits and veggies produced with use of herbasides, pestacides, and poor soil conditions. Thanks for the report on your health progress from giving your body what it craves. Read The makers diet, youll love it.

The most success I had with this was also the absolute roughest way to go about it.

Backstory: A year and a half ago I was in a really, really high-stress startup. As in, I think the bomb squad would probably have been more relaxing. The work wasn't important in the cosmic sense, but I had a real perfectionist/slave-driver boss.

This was also in a pretty tumultuous period in my personal life. So not surprisingly, my blood pressure skyrocketed. Add to that LONG days chained to a desk and eating crap (but free) food, it was a bad picture and I gained some weight, got a wicked caffeine and sugar addiction.

I went to my doctor in January because I was having a hell of a time shaking a cold. He put me on an insanely restrictive diet. The bottom line: Virtually no caffeine (like, one glass of tea total all day), no sugar added to anything, and mostly vegetables with a little fruit.

The first two weeks, I will not lie: It was hell and I was a complete jerk. I don't know how my wife put up with me those two weeks.
But after that, after the body kind of adapted itself to the new nutrition, my energy and overall well-being really skyrocketed.

The human body's an amazingly adaptable thing. Unfortunately it adapts equally well to bad habits as good, and our society's generally more streamlined for bad habits. But I count that little ordeal as one of the better things I've done.

Let my cat help you with "sugar".  I was bummin around the house the other day just sittin around watching a little TV when the cat comes up to me.  He starts rubbing up against my arm so I play with him a bit then he backs off- had enough.  A moment later I notice him on the other side of me "pawing" at a left over cereal bowl on the floor.  It had the sugary remains of whatevr cereal had been it and the cat was scooping at the carpet trying to cover the sugary residue as if he'd just recently left us a little PRIZE on the floor instead of his litter box.  Hmmm, how shall we evaluate this poop = scoop,  sugar = scoop, therefore sugar = poop. refined food/ not just sugar trick the pancreas into a false sense of well being. the pancreas is responsible for assisting in the the control of insulin, which affects glucose which makes us think.... nuerons to functon at a very basic level require a consitant glucose supply/

hey pardon the pun... but .... just a thought.....
