OK you guys,, be nice, it's a little scary posting her in general board since I haven't been in here in years, and I only play hand drums.. But, my girlfriend is in the market for a drum set.
So, yesterday went to see the big guy (my teacher) on the hill and have a rumba. My gal goes right for Dave's fat trap kit; one of the two kits sitting in the middle of Dave's 1300 sq foot sound studio. She proceeds to channel this amazing 6/8 rhythm that I think was really a 9/8 since it was three sets of three before she came back around to the snare. It was so unexpected! I've never seen her play anything but conga, djun, or djembe...
So, I started playing with her on the Tumba and played a bembe lead - really heavy on the bomba note. (the first 8th note after the one - just saying it since maybe I don't realize how much of our nerdy terminology you guys know and use yourselves) Dave, our teacher sits at the percussion kit with timbales and bells and hammers out 6/8 upbeat bell and the timbales on the doubles (or ponche). Dusty sits down at quinto and we all just ripped to shreds the most amazing rhythm I've been a part of in a long time! Whoof! It was truely incredible!
I told Lisa yesterday while were there, and several times on the way home that she needs to get herself a kit,, start taking lessons, and be well on her way into drum set life! She was mad at me for suggesting it, but really,, I could see so much talent in her little flurry that I couldn't leave it alone.
Today, she called up a friend about looking into some drums to buy and some lessons, so she's definitely convinced!
Just thought I'd throw it out to our list since you'd probably like to know about a convert from hand to stick, and maybe you might throw a resource or two my way.
Of course I know E-bay's got 'em, and so does Musician's Friend, but maybe I just like the chatter too..

Back in the 90's two of the better rock drummers here in South Florida were a husband and wife who both freqently subbed for me. The awkward thing was calling their house to offer one of them a gig - I basically would give it to whoever answered the phone, because I would feel weird asking for the other one.

Interestingly, the more ballsy and aggressive drummer of that pair was the wife - she was the one I usually was hoping would answer the phone. Both of them were excellent drummers, but she had more of a "go for it" vibe, while he was really slick and clean. But they were both great players and super cool to hang with, so I felt good knowing the gig would be in good hands no matter who I gave it to!

Speaking of aggressive, "go for it" vibe, Yvette Preyer's got it goin'! She absolutely SLAMS with Michael McDonald -- and with impeccable groove and clean chops!

Yeaaaaaa! that's cool!

i always think it's better if a couple can cross-over into each other's hobbies. that way one doesn't get bitter about golf outings, the other doesn't get knickers in a bunch over music. lol.

it sounds really bad, but the best advice i got from jump was to not play like a girl. yeah, yeah...it's a loaded phrase, but the sentiment is spot on. i took the advice and it held me in good stead. perhaps it's more accurate and/or pc to say, 'play with conviction,' but i got the idea.

why was she miffed when you suggested lessons? sounds like she's naturally gifted and they will only help to bring out her talents.

congrats and welcome back! feel free to update us on your life in the miscellaneous forum... in the "Where IS everyone?' thread. Cheesy

You are Very lucky to have a lady who is into drums.  i would love it if my girl played drums.  We could challenge each other ect..  And i would have alot more time to play, cause she would be interested.  Hahaha.  But i tried getting her into drums, but she cant do it at all.  No patience to try either, so count your blessings if you have found a percusion female companion! Thanks Dave and others.. I am extremely lucky,, or maybe virtuous,, I don't know, but I see it as a good sign,, not a competitive thing where I would be jeolous of good talent in my partner.

And Smogg, I know why she didn't want to hear it... She's so busy with a toddler daughter, a career job, a divorce, her band, and now me,,, that it's yet another thing that she feels a tug for. She's grounded enough to focus on responsibilities and doing a good job at what she's doing now, that she doesn't want something else to enter an already crowded portait of American life. She secretly dreams of retiring from it all and living off the land somewhere (if there's anywhere yet left) and get off the "grid" and just focus on music and living.
And yep,, that's my dream too..

Dude, come to South Carolina when you two are ready. We only have four million residents in the whole STATE.

Nice weather, too.

Great magazine, very useful, full of info! I lean towards the homesteading thing just a bit north of you (Longmont). If you really want to look for that, it seems that the midwest would be your best bet.

When I gig with my wifes band (shes the lead singer) I sometimes go out front to sing and she plays drums.  Im a closet crooner and love to sing old standards.  Plus she puts in these great harmonies that make me sound better than I should.  The crown reaction isnt "wow the drummer can sing" its "wow the singer can play drums!"  Its been fun for both of us and adds variety to the show.

And Smoggrocks:   A female, hard rock guitar player I know says dont use the line "dont play like a girl."  She says to say "play with more testosterone." Grin

I don't think I could handle a situation with my wife and I both drummers. We don't really get into each others work areas. My wife is a nurse and listens to pop music on the side. I,m a title & tag agent and play music on the side. I don't tell her anything concerning her job and she respects my space when it comes to playing music. She will, however, tell me if she likes one thing or the other, but not how or what to change. I had problems when our bassmans girl friend was trying to tell me how many beats were in the solo slot of Wipe Out. It went on for a few minutes and I smilled at her, gave her a pat on the head and went back on stage. Then I asked that four bottles of beer be taken to her and placed on my tab. Yes, I know what that makes me. A big *****. Please female DC'rs forgive me for I know what I was doing, but I ment no disrespect.
