For some reason, I find this setup very cool looking: I found it on this guy's myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/ginnaphluidThe left side crash looks like it would be tough to get to, and I don't know why he didn't just use legs on the rack tom. Still, I'd love to sit behind that kit and check it out! My guess is that the bass drum is a 32" - what do you think?

Interesting look. Humongo bass drum! Everything looks like it might be a little hard to reach! I like the cowbell front and center!
And is that David Spade with bed hair?

I've always wanted to try a floor tom in a rack tom position.
I don't think that kick drum would fit in my backseat though.

I remember the drummer from the Romantics having this type of setup. Check the "What I like about You" video.

What I Like About You... what a great song And yes... that is a neat setup. I wish I had the guts to do something like that. Just call me Mr. Traditional I guess I'm just too practical.

To me, the thought of trying to get from the "rack tom" to the floor without the kick getting in the way seems way hard.
Talk about your ergonomically unfriendly setups...
"But dude! It looks so rad!"
I must be getting old.

I like the look. It looks old. But then, the drummer claims to be 98 years old, so maybe he's the original owner?

I'd say the bass drum is at least a 32". It looks like an old marching drum. See the spurs are clamped to the reso hoop?
I like the look of the drums, they have a lot of character.

Neat kit. The tube lugs on the bass drum give the kit just a hint of a "Fred Young" vibe. So, Keith - how long do you think that "manly" cowbell clamp would stay in place if you were to give that kit a test ride? As to the size of the bass drum, I'm guessing closer to 28" at most, maybe even a 26. It's often tricky to judge distances and perspectives in these photos (I've seen pictures of my kit where the drum sizes don't seem to be accurately represented), but I'm guessing that "rack" tom is a 14", not a 16". (I don't think that's a Pearl S2000, which could handle 16" drums, but even if it were, would you try and squeeze a 16x16 floor tom onto a snare stand?) The bass drum looks to be about twice as tall as the "rack" tom, so for it to be a 32" BD, that would have to be a 16x16 floor. Looks more like a 14x14 to me. Also, if it's a 32, then it would be 10" higher than a 22 (yes, I did very well on my math SATs, thankyouverymuch), and that drum doesn't look almost 50% taller than a 22. I've got a 26" bass drum that I use for some orchestral work, and the drum pictured above looks closer to that size, IMO.

It just seems taller than a 26 to me, when you see how it towers over the snare and floor tom. So I think it's at least a 28. I've sent a friends request to the guy - if he writes back, I'll ask him how big that thing is.

How about this one? Starclassic tom, Vistalite floor tom, and probably a mismatched bass drum. But I'll bet Taylor made it sound great. Corey

With some low-tech Microsoft Paint trickery (freehand-drawing a line along the diameter of the rack tom, and selecting and moving said line to the bass drum as a scale), and assuming the rack is 14", I'm going to call the bass drum 30".

I was going to guess 30-inch Kick drum. Looks like a Fred Young (ala Kentucky Headhunters) type of set-up! Looks cool.

The rack/floor looks a bit larger to me than the snare to me (although it could be distortion from a wide angle lens). But if it is bigger, and assuming the snare is a 14, I'm thinking the rack/floor is a 16 after all.
(this is a pretty cool sleuthing discussion. . . can't wait to hear if he gets back to Mr A with a response)

Regardless of what sizes these drums turn out to be (I'm going with 14/14/18/28, just for those keeping score), that kit definitely is a finalist for the "Big Bottom" prize!

I posted details over in the "Upcoming Gigs" thread about a a couple of shows I'm doing in DC with a band called ScribbleMonster. The guy who runs the band has already made jokes about how he envisions the limo driver meeting us at the airport with a sign reading: "Scrabble Master".

I'll go with that too. Manly kit Keith? The cymbals are too low to start with.

Hahahahaha such a unique kit. i would say manly kit would include more toms. But love the size of that bass drum. Reminds me of Tommy Lees. It would be hard to move around that kit though. 2 floor toms so far apart would be tricky. although i love the cowbell idea.

I couldn't let this go and you guys can correct me if I am wrong but would a 32" bass drum actually be 10" taller than a 22" bass drum since that is a diameter dimension. The height difference would be less than 10". In fact, I think it would be 5". Somebody help me out and confirm that please.
