I admit up front that Roy Haynes is one of my idols, and I bought Coltrane at Newport '63 specifically because RH is on it, along with McCoy Tyner and Jimmy Garrison.  This disc has been in the changer for a while now, and the more I listen the more I hear.

There's a long stretch of Impressions where Tyner and Garrison drop out completely, leaving Haynes and Coltrane to improvise together, and it's a true tour de force for both.  Trane is on fire, and Haynes is simply amazing.  His ability to play extremely busy parts that are always complementary to the other players is IMO unsurpassed.

The Quartet with Elvin is certainly a classic, but I'm not sure the Quartet with Roy isn't better.

On that note, Haynes has played with every great sax player starting with Charlie Parker, and continues to create great music.  What an example he sets, and what a legacy he'll eventually leave.

yeah, Roy is incredible.  I have a couple of Chick Corea CD's ("Trio Music") with him playing which always blows me away.

I'm phasing back into my jazz studies so this thread is timely.  That record you speak of is a year after John Coltrain's "For Lover's" CD which is full of ballads.

I will have to look for the Newport '63 cd.  I did indeed find "Live in Stockholm 1963" but that unfortunately is with Elvin on drums. Undecided Grin    http://music.yahoo.com/read/review/14201103

Ok, I found "Impressions" finally from "In Europe Live" Charly Records- sounds like Elvin on drums in this one too.

Roy IS absolutly killin', I caught him a coupla weeks back at Birdland. Coincidentally, it was the 57th anniversary of (the original) Birdland's opening and Roy was on the bill (playing with Bird). Cat is 81 and still killin' it.

But I gotta say, the Trane Quartet with Elvin is a special moment in the history of mankind. It doesn't take anything away from Roy, but thank Deity that the classic Quartet happened.

i want to know what mr. haynes is doing to look so dang young. obviously, playing is working well for him, but beyond that, he must have a really healthy lifestyle. he barely looks 60, for cripes sake.

paul, is that newport cd the one with archie schepp? probably not, but there are some really nice numbers off that one, too. [my favorite things, in particular]. i'll have to pick up the one you mentioned.

i missed the roy haynes shows recently. i have seen him before, but i wanted to check out the birdland thing and see stuff more up close.

anyhow, a legendary player who still has lots to say.

I listen to A Love Supreme at least once a week. I hear something new every time. That was just an inspired musical moment by four amazing musicians.

Roy Haynes and Kenny Garrett -- pow! -- great music.

Chick Corea's "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" is probably the one Corea CD that's always within reach of my CD player. I had the album and then tape cassette before that. It was my primer to playing the style, although I've never been able to capture that woody ping of his cymbal. Sweeeet stuff.

A friend of mine in Boston told me Roy's grandson is the next great thing in jazz drums.

For what its worth ... both A Love Supreme and Now He Sings, Now He Sobs are on my Essential Jazz Standards list of albums to own.

I've got A Love Supreme on CD, but my copy of Now He Sings, Now He Sobs  is on LP. Got to get me a CD copy of that soon!

Try not thinking about it and just listen to the passion of the music. It will sweep you away if you relax, I promise. IMO, what makes the whole thing click is Elvin driving the whole thing while laying back. It's rhythmic dissonance and it makes the whole ensemble sizzle with complexity.

Thanks Bart.  I was going to post and ask you where that was.  Great list.  I have to do some listening now.
