Where am I and why am I in this handbasket?

« on: December 13, 2006, 05:46 PM »

I gave myself an early Christmas present and bought a pair of Istanbul Sultan Hi-Hat cymbals. I saw and played them some time ago at a music store and fell in love with them and have been wanting to buy a pair ever since. I was fortunate enough to get a nice Christmas bonus this year and so I took part of it and rewarded myself with a new pair of these hi-hats.  Cheesy

These cymbals just have a great sound and they look fabulous to boot. I don't know if anyone else has these cymbals and/or an opinion on them but I would love to hear from you if you do if you have played or owned them.

BTW, I bought these online through vintagedrum.com and got a very good price and great service from those folks.

Anyway.....I think I am going to go play some now and make them sing!

Sweet!  Photos and sound files please!!!  Is that Mehmet, Agop, or pre-split?

I too added an Istanbul to my lineup.  I didn't want to get it until after the new year, but this model is rare on ebay and I had to snag it when I could.  It's a 22" Agop Signature Ride.  It's VERY thin.  I have to wait until Christmas to use it though.  I'll post pics and hopefully a sound file too...

I do indeed, along with a 20" ride, and 14 and 16" crashes:

I have those hihats.  I actually got them from the same place!  Great deals on that site, pretty much just on instanbul cymbals though.  Everything else is normal price.

I have the 13" sultan hihats.  I use them way more than my 14" Ks.

Yes, the Sultans are LOVELY cymbals! My hi hats are amazing. See below! My Istanbul collection is steadily growing... 10 and 12" Trash hits, 22" Trash Hit, 21" Mel Lewis Ride (2 rivets), Alchemy (made by AGOP) 22" China... all of the rock. Most have come from thecymbalshop.com.

I should have mentioned the specifics in my initial post. These are 14" Mehmet Sultans. I put a few snapshots and a sound file of me just messing around on them for those who are interested. Mind you, this recording was about as low budget as you can get, a laptop, cheap mic and audacity.

Phooey! I couldn't get the sound file to work. Sad  They sure look great tho!  And a sweet finish on the kit!

I can see myself easily becoming a cymbal junkie...

Nice!

Yes, Robyn, it is quite easy to become a cymbal junkie.  I sure have become one!

Hey YYZ, how do you like your trash hits.  I'm eyeballing those as well...

I really like them. The 10 and 12" trash hits make great, quick, trashy accents (think like a very small, quick china). The 22" is really neat. Sort of a cross between a ride and a china. I use it for trashy left side ride sounds, or as a sort of china-crash cymbal.

OOOH, then my perceptions of the sound files I've heard are accurate...  Definitely need to get a few.  I want a 12" to mount on my $10 Wuhan 12" china as my own version of an auxilliary "trash hat".  Then I'll get a bigger one.  Based on the few sound files I heard, I think the 20" might do the trick...  If you, uh, decide you need to part with that 12", let me know...  Wink

Jeff,
Outstanding early christmas present.  I migrated to Istanbuls (both Agop and Mehmet) this past year.  I too have a set of 14" sultans.  They have a huge, crisp, clear sound.  I also have 16, 17 and 18" sultan crashes, a 20" sultan flat ride, a 20" turk regular ride and a 22" agop turk china.  I have posted about these cymbals before. They sound great and are a tremendous value.  I am trying to find myself a 19-20" jazz weight crash ride as maybe a late xmas present to myself...  Again, excellent choice, and keep that collection growing!

So for you folks who own both mehmet and agop; do you prefer one over the other or do you consider them to be equally deserving?

I am definitely going to look at adding more istanbul's to my collection. I just love these things. The only prob is that there aren't any local stores where I can go play them. I was lucky to find a small store locally that just happened to have the sultan hi-hats that turned me on to these cymbals in the first place. So I may just have to make a sight unseen/heard purchase. A nice ride to match these new hats would be my first venture. I love my old K custom dry but I might just have to find her a new istanbul buddy. Cymbal junkie is such an easy thing to become but then there are worse vices.....

Moose, very nice collection!

rfd, I totally agree, these cymbals are a tremendous value. Hopefully they will stay that way long enough for me to complete my collection!

Take care all!

Jeff

Not necessarily:

Superstition Percussion
The Cymbal Shop
Cymbalsonly.com (now stocking Agops again after their little tiff)

And, I have heard very good things about the service from all 3 suppliers. I have only dealt with the cymbal shop, but many people have dealt with the other 2 and were pleased as well.

I have dealt with primarily CymbalsOnly, and have been very pleased.  Very helpful and knowledgable.  I have also never actually played these in a store (I know, a very dangerous things to do), but I found the sound file for each cymbal to be very representative of the actual cymbal...hence my state of contentment.  I too just picked up an early self christmas present...a Mehmet turk 19" jazz crash ride.  verrrry nice.  May the brass collection continue to grow.  Cheers, Bob
