I use both Aquarian "Performance 2" on two sets and "Response 2" heads on another set. All sets have "Classic Clear" reso heads..... I'm getting due for new heads on 2 sets. I'm thinking I may give the new ones a try. I'm hoping the new ones hit a middle ground. Has anyone used them yet?  http://www.aquariandrumheads.com/products/display.asp?id=31  If so, input would be good..... I've got about 30 heads I've taken off sets and most are new or only a couple gigs on them. So I would appreciate any input before I end up with more in my "NA, don't like" box. Just curious......   Huh

Chip,

I did a quick little review on these in the Gear Reviews section.

I bought some for just my 14 and 16" YMCA floor toms.
These heads come off to me as similar to Evans G2's - although not exactly the same. I believe they are replacing the Double Thins. However I like them just a bit better than the Double Thins.

I am digging them so far. Smiley

Aquarian just sent me a set of the Super-2â„¢ drumheads to try out ... and review. I won't be able to get to it until next month however. I've got the clear Super-2â„¢ for my 10, 12, 14, 16-inch Toms, and a coated Super-2â„¢ for the Snare batter.

I don't know if you read my response to Super-2â„¢ question in another thread ... but the Super-2â„¢ are basically the reverse of what the Double Thinâ„¢, now history, were.

Super-2â„¢ is a two-ply drumhead; 5-mil mylar on top, 7-mil mylar underneath. The Double Thinâ„¢ drumheads were just the opposite. I would have guess that the Double Thinâ„¢ had the thinner ply on top, but I was wrong.

From my conversation with Chris Brady at Aquarian, who said "the reversal of the plies makes a BIG difference" ... I think I'm going to like these heads.

The Aquarian Response-2â„¢ is very much like a Remo Emperor; both are two-plies of 7-mil mylar.

The Aquarian Classic is single-ply of 10-mil mylar; so is the Remo Ambassador.
The Aquarian Hi-Frequency is a single-ply of 7-mil mylar; so is the Remo Diplomat.
The Aquarian Classic Snare head is 3-mil; Aquarian Marching Snare head is 5-mil.

That should give you some perspective on what kind of sounds you'll get ply wise ... plus the great Aquarian workmanship.

cavanman hit upon something I liked in his revue .....  "I'd recommend these to anyone needing a quality head that gives a nice warm tone without being too muffled or thuddy."

On one set the Performance 2 is too "boxy" sounding, but not that noticeable on the other set with the same heads. I was going to put "Response 2" on that boxy sounding set , then Aquarian came out with this head. Thanks guys, that's kind of the middle ground I'm looking for. I'm anxious to hear Barts revue after he's beat on them a while....Now all I have to do is get past Christmas and get some "head cash" put together.  Cool

Bart, which of your kits are you putting these heads on?

Bart, which of your kits are you putting these heads on?

I'm going to put the Clear Super-2â„¢ drumheads on the Toms of my FIBES kit (Jasper shells). My Yamaha Recording Customs are dry sounding by nature (birch shells and rounded bearing-edge), so I would like to get a better idea of what these sound like on a more general shell. I think I'm going to put the Coated Super-2â„¢ on a PEARL 6.5x14 Stainless Steel Snare drum. At this point I'm not wanting a two-ply batter head on any of my wood Snare drums. I'm thinking it's going to sound nice on the 6.5x14 Stainless ... but we'll see.

I'm going to do my best to get this done at the first of the year, and I'm going to video the process ... then share it on the Cafe Podcast.
