So, do people generally hold their sticks at an angle with the butts sticking out (not exactly the same angle as your arm), or an angle that goes directly in the middle of your palms.

I have always played at a larger angle, but recently I've experimented with different angles.

edit: I suppose this question probably doesn't apply to french grip.  But more german or american.

if i understand you correctly...

i started out the first way and have gravitated to the second. i'm mostly using matched grip now, and my right and left hand are finally starting to look almost identical. major breakthrough for me.

I believe you understand me correctly.

The thing is, I find it awkard to play with the stick in the middle of my palm in this more german somewhat american grip.  I find myself slipping back to the old way of the stick being positioned when I'm trying to practice.

well i'm not sure i have the final verdict, but my experience has been that my hands began to naturally 'morph' to matched grip after being somewhat stuck in american grip. i just kept rotating the stick a little bit everytime i noticed my grip would change to a more severe american grip. ultimately, this got me to move toward matched grip. i agree that american grip can get unwieldy. it feels comfortable at first, but then it ends up being awkward for certain things, namely doubles.

you might want to try choking up on the stick more [i mean, holding it closer to the butt end of the stick; not choking it with your hands], so the stick is more evenly balanced. after a while that 'sense' of added stick length, plus forcing myself to be aware to keep my thumbs up, helped me feel how matched grip should feel in my hands.

if you have a drum teacher, ask for help in achieving a grip that works for you. it's good to be comfortable with a variety of grips, but i think people tend to default to one grip that works for them most of the time.

Having someone who understands grips watch you play is about the only way to master a grip. What's comfortable now might no be comfortable tomorrow when you play something else. What's comfortable now might get you carpal tunnel in 10 years.

my grip is generally a matched american grip but I will switch it from say a palm down postiton on the hats to a palm to the side position on the ride.  I simply find my torso side to side rotation to have to be less strained if i move from an elbow up to and elbow down with the right hand as I ove from left to right.  As I stay in one place for an extended period of time though I will change it up a bit on the palm orintation BUT what remains consistent is that the butt end of the stick on both hands will be in contact with the end digits of the last three fingers.  I'm not allowing the stick butt to be in front or extend down the base of the palm- it extends out the side of the palm midway between the middle of the palm to where the palm just meets the wrist.

When playing Matched grip, my sticks form a larger acute triangle (almost 90 degrees). When playing traditional grip, my sticks form a 90 degree angle.

This straight angle with the palm thing would cause really bad technique and eventually would lead to carpul tunnel syndrome (if I am holding it right).

What your saying is having the butt end of the stick directly out of the center of your wrist is bad? I was taught that you should play at a 90 degree angle (matched), and my teacher defiantly knows what he is talking about too. I originally had the butt on a slight angle out, but now that I started with Gerry Hemingway (don't know if any of you know him) he has retaught grip to me. When I play at faster tempos I find myself slipping back into old habits though.
