I'm just curious about what schools offer a program in studying the drumset as opposed to orchestral drumming.

I know I've seen postings before here, with names of such rare schools.

I searched, but I came up empty. If anyone has an idea of a school that would offer such a program I'd be eternally greatful.

I'm currently taking lessons with a great teacher in the Bay area, so this is just a pure curiosity question.

Thanks

Most schools with a semi-decent music program will have a private instructor who knows what they are doing on kit.  I went to Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX and they had one there.  Just look at the music programs of the schools you are interested in, and let that be your decision maker.   Smiley

Many colleges have excellent music programs that offer drumset as part of it's curriculum.  Beklee, University od North Texas and Miami are 3 that come to mind immediately.  Most schools are also located in an area that have great set teachers as well.

The techniques, though they play an important role in the early stage, should not be too restrictive, complex or mechanical. If we cling to them, we will become bound by their limitation.  Any technique, however worthy and desirable, becomes a disease when the mind is obsessed with it.

Thanks for the feedback Big Animal and (Tony).
I'll probably start by taking a closer look at some of the music programs in and around San Francisco for now, and keep studying with Gigi Gonaway here in Oakland.

Thanks for the info,

When I was a student at the university I went to I wanted to take lessons.  Thinking the percussion class might be a place to start I signed up for it and wthin the first 10 min. the instructor indicated that if we wanted to LEARN how to play, etc. we'd need to sign up for private lessons.  I dropped what wasn't advertised as but ended up being a survey course for teachers and and signed up for private lessons with the head of the percussion dept.  I was able to identify what I wanted to learn and he took it from there.  16 weeks of private instruction for 100 bucks tuition- can't beat that price anywhere for lessons.
Definitly check on those options- privately the instructor should be able to teach whatever is deemed necessary.
