Hi

I am a fifty year old drummer, I have never sat down and practiced I have always
just sat down and played , figured out as I went along. I have now decided at this age
to become the best drummer I can be and want to start practicng but I not sure where to start. Could any one offer some advice here. You can check out my playing ability's
at www.garageband.com under the band name Goat. Please any advise would be helpful.

Hi Tapp, welcome aboard!  I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm sure a lot of folks will offer up some suggestions.  But, you'll also find that the vast majority of players here will ALWAYS recommend some lessons - no matter how advanced you are.  So, I'll just go ahead and say it for the rest of the gang:  Seek out a good instructor in your area who tell him/her what you're after.  The benefits of a face-to-face instructor are huge.  At the very least, do that for awhile so you know you're on the right track.  Then you can get some books or DVD's to augment that.  If you're not in an area with instructors, I highly recommend Bart's video lessons.  Next best thing to being there!

EDIT:  Are you the Chicago band with the song "Upside Down"?  Cool stuff.  Reminds me of Alice in Chains.  Nice supportive playing IMHO.  I'll let the more qualified guys say more.

Yes, it's the only sensible first step.
You need a professional appraisal and help setting some goals.
How else would you know what needs fixing?

Oh, well if you ever met my father he would've already told you, and he's not even a professional drummer/plumber/carpenter/lawyer/doctor ... etc. etc.

If you have met my father, ignore him and hire a professional drum instructor. Even if the idea of sitting with an instructor once a week or two weeks or whatever doesn't thrill you, just go once and talk. Have him assess your playing. The worst that could happen is you talk drums with someone who knows what they're talking about for 30+ minutes. I've paid much more for much less entertaining content.
