I am fired up about the new album, can't wait! I'm hearing a twinge of old Rush in that clip, especially that last chord, very "Hemispheres-ish". I understand the song should be hitting the radio sometime next month.

My buddy went to a guitar seminar up in Toronto this past summer and studied with Alex Lifeson and Rik Emmett. Alex was kind enough to share with him some insight on the new album such as some alternate tunings they used and other snippets of info. He had mentioned that he was using open D tuning on many songs. I can't wait to hear it all.

OK, I like Rush, too, and was excited to hear they were perhaps revisiting some older ideas, but that was four bars and change of one chord, ended by another. (Assuming I heard the time signature correctly) Argh. That does not qualify as a snippet.

Sorry, but that 10 seconds was a complete waste of my time ... and every Rush fan should be frustrated and disappointed with the "clip" ... IMO.  Surely they've got more than that to share without giving away the entire album.  Roll Eyes

They do that so you want to hear more.

The problem is ... this little clip doesn't make me want to hear more!

They (Rush) would have done better to just include the audio with their site and leave it at that. To do the whole "to hear a taste of the new single click here" is absurd. There's nothing there that makes me want to hear more because there's nothing in that 10 seconds that makes it special. The only thing special about that 10 seconds, in my opinion, is that Rush claims it ... and for my ears, that's not enough.

Sorry, but anyone who finds that 10 seconds special and/or unique does so only because they are Rush fans ... and not because the 10 seconds was some hint to how inspiring or wonderful the "new album" is going to be.

Lest you get the wrong idea ... I appreciate Rush and first started listening to them when I was 14-years-old (1978). I wasn't just a fan ... I worshiped them! But times have changed for many of us; definitely me. As I (we) get older, the "oo ah" just isn't enough anymore; I need substance. For me, this clip has no substance that makes me want to listen further. Unison syncopated figures being played over one chord? Please. Rush may have a new hit single, it may turn out to be incredible, but this clip gives me nothing nor does it do anything for me. All of that to say, don't be surprised with others when they have responses like mine. I just don't buy the hype, that's all, and that seems to be what many bands have been selling these days ... hype.

I thought the sound was awesome (I was wearing headphones when I listened to it).  I want to hear more.

Rush is rush.  Neil can poop on a paper plate and make a gold record so it really doesn't matter what we think.  I'm glad the man had another record in him.  He's actually had (as well as the band) an incredibly prolific career.  They never fail to impress me.

I agree, a waste of time. I have to wonder if it was the guys who picked that or some marketing guy thinking "OOH this will get them!!"  NOT!!!   Have a 30-40 sec loop playing when you connect to the web site, that might get more attention.

And there's my point. No matter what these guys do, good or bad, there will be those who like/love/worship it no matter what. Frankly, I think that's an awful place to be in. Oh well, to each their own ... but I'm not buying the hype.

I think it's a joke.

Not that the clip isn't from the new album, but I think they purposefully chose a clip that really...doesn't say much of anything, but says it loudly!  They have a fairly robust sense of humor when it comes to things like that.

It made me want to buy the album just so I could hear that clip put into context.

That clip has me perplexed as much as it aggravates for it's lack of musical revelation. I've listened to it a few times now and I still can't figure out the time signature. Who's setting the pulse and who's playing over the bar? Is it the acoustic guitar or the group hits?

They don't call it math rock for nothing!

It is impossible for anyone to figure out and know for certain because it could be written in dozens and dozens of different ways. Where's beat one start? On what beat does the last note hit? Not having anything to go on or any hint to a pulse means you can't even begin to figure out what they did. Perhaps once we all hear more than 10 seconds we'll have more to go on and you could figure it out.

Rush should make a contest out of it; guess the time signature. If anyone got it right, it would be pure luck.

It could be in 4/4 with syncopated figures. Listen to the background sounds that sound like acoustic guitar strings (to me at least) looped. IF they are playing sixteenth-notes, and if the first note is beat one of the bar, there's six full measures plus one final bar for the last note. IF this is the case, it's in 4/4 with six measures of syncopated unison rhythms followed by the release in bar 7.

Gaddabout ... did you ask this just to get me to listen to this thing again?! Man, that is a sick joke!  Grin

Below is the syncopated rhythm as I hear it ... in 4/4. Think sixteenth-notes (listen to the background divisions of the beat). The bold/red numbers indicate what you play; you count the rest.

1 e a u 2 e a u 3 e a u 4 e a u
1 e a u 2 e a u 3 e a u 4 e a u
1 e a u 2 e a u 3 e a u 4 e a u
1 e a u 2 e a u 3 e a u 4 e a u

I can't believe I took the time to do this, but I do like figuring this kind of stuff out. I spent more time writing it out here on the forum than I did figuring it out. I should have just opened Finale and printed it out real quick, but this way more people can read and 'enjoy' the 10 seconds.  Grin

That's accurate to my ears! Writing it out in 4/4 made sense to me, too, I just wasn't confident in assuming where 1 in the first bar started. Now that I see what you've transcribed, I think you're assumption was the right one.

And, yes, I'd participate in a "guess the time signature" contest if Rush did something like that.
