I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with their hands going numb. Its just my right hand and gets better after playing for like an hour or so.The same thing happens when I ride my motorcycle for extended period of time.

My hand gets a little residual tingle after using the leaf blower in the fall.  Goes away on its own after a few minutes.  Can't say I have had the same problem from drumming.  I'd suggest seeking the advice of a physician or a chiropractor.

It could be a number of things; nerves (like carpal tunnel), blood circulation being minimized, etc.

Stretching and taking frequent breaks can really help with both of the problems I've mentioned. I would also suggest that you are gripping the drumstick (or handle bars) too tight.

It could also be from the vibration of the drumstick when you hit the drum/cymbal, as well as the vibration of the handle bars on your motorcycle when you ride. I've even experienced numbness when mowing the lawn. For me, I was gripping the handle of the mower too tightly.

If your knuckles turn white, you are gripping too tight.

I've had some problems with this in the past, and it was attributed to Raynaud's Phenomenon which I was diagnosed with as a kid. Today, I don't have the problems because of exercise, stretching, proper diet, prayer and God healing me. I do struggle with the first two issues I mentioned, from time to time, because I don't take frequent breaks and stretch out like I should. Basically, I lose track of time and forget.  Undecided

If the problem persists and you've dealt with things that you may be doing to cause it, be sure to check with your physician.

Yes, My right hand goes numb.  It only happens when I play the Roland drums at chruch.  They restrict the drum volume to the point that I pound the drums through the stage.  When the bass player tells me that he can't hear the hi hat, all he can hear is my stick smacking the rubber I feel the need to pound them. I would say that you are gripping to tight and maybe hitting to hard.  This is just me. Your problem maybe different. I don't have this problem with acoustic drums.

Like I said 05R6,

I have a problem with swelling at the base of my right thumb and some serious pain at times.  I figured it was arthritis, but it seems to be a little more than debilitating.  I've been using a prescription topical cream called ketoprophen.  It works for a while but, it's only like a "bandaid" solution.  I'm thinking about acupuncture.  drumming make sit feel better and the swelling goes down, but in the mornings it's stiff and sore all over again.  ARRGGG! ~Kat
