I took my daughter to Ringling Brothers the other night. I've never been to the circus and it was nice to see that they still used live music for a majority of the show. We had a great time and I just have to say...Very cool Drum Book! A couple of odd time tunes and the drummer was right in que with the performers.

>heh< When I took my son a number of years ago, we visited w/ the drummer during the intermission. He had a very nice oak kit w/ all the extras, and loved the circus gig. Very cool!

You jogged my memory just by mentioning the circus. In the spring of 1973 or 1974 a college friend asked me if I'd join him on a trip, taking his brother to his circus job. His brother was going to be the drummer. We were in school in Syracuse, NY and had to drop him off in Long Island somewhere.

We helped the brother get settled and had a ball roaming around the circus grounds. I remember thinking how cramped everything was. I think the drummer had to sleep with a bunch of clowns (literally) and remember they loved in very cramped campers that looked more like the back of a tractor trailer truck. One of the clowns showed us how he just fit in the bed from end to end. His body just made it inside the trailer.

I'm happy to hear they still use live music because I did go to  a circus a few years ago that had it all recorded.

last time i saw ringlin' bros. was maybe 14 years ago. i don't recall seeing a live band, but it's possible there was one. it was a bit dark. i do remember being disappointed at the high-tech nature of the event, though. the clowns were on rollerblades and there was a lot of neon lights and laser stuff.

i suppose they do have to keep up with the times, but i was hungering for the nostalgia of the 'olde time' circus. well the elephant smell was still in full force, so that was good.

this chick woman i used to work with got tired of the corporate world, so she went to clown school and joined the circus. i thought that was so cool and daring. [though i do think she's making...peanuts these days].

Two cannibals are having lunch one day - eating a clown.  One turns to the other and says: "Does this taste funny to you?"

I saw the RB&BB circus when it came thru town last year.  They had a live band, but a good portion of the show had pre-recorded music as well, especially for the clown routines.  There were a lot of recorded sound effects for the slips, slaps, and falls along with the sound track for their bits.

and another ba dum crash to that.

that makes sense for choreographed bits like that. it would be hard to time that with a live band, especially under darker conditions.

by gosh, it's so slow here today i might have to go join the circus. i just need those clem kadiddlehoffer shoes.

When I took the kids to the RBB&B (I think around 12 years ago) the drummer was covering just about everything. He was fabulous, nailing the trapeze catches, landings, everything.  He backed up the music very well and then played all the rolls/accents for the acts.  In fact, I think some of the music was recorded but he played to it live in order to catch the unexpected or off time circus stuff.  I missed a bunch of the acts since my eyes were glued to the drummer - I could see just enough of what he was doing and was close enough to hear em without the mix.  I can tell you that his attention span was huge, he had to be following everything in real time throughout the show. Although there was typically one main act in the center ring, other stuff was going on and he was sometimes covering it all...  For the most part it was of course all choreographed but he had to be on top of it if the elephant didn't stand up the first time or if the trapeze performer missed.  Cool stuff.

That's what the drummer at our performance did--I think there was very little pre-recorded, if at all.
heh...I really dig those green pointy-toe jester shoes. Now those are just cool!

Erik Hargrove (formerly with James Brown) just stopped with Ringling after 4 (?) years with them. Anyway the above reminded me of a joke, forgive me if I've told this here already

International ballet company is touring the US, complete with orchestra, when, in some little town, their percussionist becomes violently ill. Desperate, they contact the AF of M local and get the number of a guy "who reads fly ****, has played in the pit for vaudeville shows, musicals, everything" so they say OK, fine.
After the performance the conductor calls him backstage and fires him, saying that this is the worst performamcne by a professional he's ever witnessed, much less been a part of. The drummer says "Whadya mean, I caught everything!?!"
