I am evil Homer, I am evil Homer..!

« on: April 28, 2007, 09:57 AM »

I've been wondering lately if the benefits of physical fitness aren't more psychological than physical, when it comes to drumming.

Truth be told, most drumming isn't terribly physically demanding.  If it were, we'd stay fit just by drumming.

I see guys in horrible shape who can bash all night on the drums.

Having said that, physical fitness can help a person be a better accountant or programmer or whatever.  Those jobs aren't physical, but when people keep fit they tend to have better quality sleep, more energy, more altertness...

What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts are that the guys will be here in a minute and we are going to play for 6 hours and I am going to sweat 5 bottles of water and get one heck of a cardiovascular work out.  And as far as the phycological side of it, I am Nutz!!!

I am not a hard hitter or an agressive drummer.  The biggest workout for me is during load in and load out.

It's the same with any job. If you're a builder, you relax sitting in an armchair, if you're a programmer, you relax walking, swimming, or doing some exercise... You need health and a good sleep, always.
But when you're a drummer, I don't know. I wouldn't say it's not physical exercise, but it is, anyway, a sitting job. A lot depends on what you play and how easy you can make it. There is, for example, a hard song with a strong tiring beat with my band, which I don't like and the beat is very unfamiliar for my taste - I always tell them that when we play it, a guitar or whatever solo must follow it so as I could stand up and walk off stage for a few seconds and gather myself.
So fitness, both mentally and physically, is very important. If I was fitter, I would do that song laughing, but without it, I just suffer to play it right,

There is far to much evidence that diet and exercize can affect your total being. Read antioxidant revolution. I dont WANT this to be true, im lazy, but what you put down the hatch and how you take care of yourself affects your very cell function which by the way, is YOU.

You have to keep in mind that being in shape and being in shape for drumming isn't necessarily equal. Just because someone can bash away on drums for a long time, which I personally think is physical, doesn't mean they are in good shape or could go run a marathon. I do think that the better health you are in, the better your whole life will be. There are always some exceptions, but for the most part, I believe that is true. It has been proven that our brain functions better when we exercise regularly, eat healthy, and are at our ideal body weight. Funny thing also, research shows that our brain works better when we are in a clean environment rather than a messy or cluttered environment.

Recent research has confirmed exercise is as effective an anti-depressant as therapy.

Back to drumming....
Some drummers are very physical.
Kenny Aronoff?
I was physically exhausted while touring. I gave my all while performing for two hours every night.
If you are not that physical a drummer, I would recommend daily exercise.

There are two basic levels to being in shape...How fit you THINK you are, and how fit you REALLY are.  Those two items can be miles apart, or completely in sync.  This comes as no suprise, but as I age, while the mind is willing, the body may not be able.  I have to keep working harder to maintain weight and the same level of fitness that I once had 20, 10 and even 5 years ago.  A centered mental atitude is absolutely necessary, but there is no substitute for actual physical fitness.
Not yet ready for the rocking chair...Bob

I think that the difference in playing Take it easy by the Eagles and Enter Sandman by Metallica or Pupet Master is a big difference in excersise. I think that Bonham was a physical drummer.  However, I think that jogging, swimming or bike riding would be more benificial than drumming.  Tommy Aldridge talks about staying in shape by mostly bike riding.  I find that the older I get, even sweating 5 bottles of water out
when I play doesn't take the place of real excersise.
