Drum machines have no soul

« on: April 24, 2007, 07:48 AM »

Hi gang, I suffer from arthritis and a few other hand ailments..I've been prescribed Ketoprophen, a very expensive RX only cream that is whipped up at a pharmacy.  It works but, it takes weeks of use and it doesn't always stop the pain.

I found a roll-on by the makers of that "Head on" stuff.  It's called Stopain, roll-on.  It has Glucosamine and MSM included.  It is fairly smell free and tingles in all the right ways.  It can be used a many as five times a day with no particular side effects.  Can be found at Walgreens.  I got two for $9.99.  I keep one in my drum case and one with my practice kit.  I feel like a human again.

Drumming isn't the cause of my plight.....long time video gamer, arggg!  I know that's kid stuff.  I dig the brain activity and the competitiveness of gaming.  Unfortunatley it has taken its toll on my right thumb. Actually drumming makes it feel better so, I try to get in a couple hours of practice everyday.

If anyone has hand ailments or knee problems while playing, this should help greatly!  Rock on~Kat

I'll try some.  Stopain... hmmm.  Thanks.

I slather on "biofreeze" also.  Smells pretty strong though.  I also chomp alot of motrin- I try to stay away from drugs though.  I really like them- that's the problem  Roll Eyes

yeah, I hate pain.  I have tennis elbow and a bad shoulder.  I should probably see the chiropractor as well.

I just bought some Stoppain 2 days ago because of this thread. I bought the extra strength spray. I play tennis and have tendinitis in my bicep area. The stoppain worked great Thursday night for some singles. Yesterday I was hurting though. The stoppain covered up the pain, but didn't remove the injury. Of course, that would be expecting way too much for it to heal also. It is nice stuff. As far as the smell, the spray isn't bad unless you use a lot. I sprayed my arm yesterday from the top to bottom. My eyes were watering as a result of the smell. I will use it more sparingly now.

Nothing works as well as a steroid injection for these sorts of pains... especially the tennis elbow. See your doc!

The only problem with cortisone or steriod shots is if used on a fairly regular basis it can cause the bone to erode.  I already discussed this with my physician.  You run the risk on dependence on the shots as well.  While it is the most effective way to help the healing process, it can also lead you to have surgery.  It's all a catch 22.  For arms and shoulders the shots are best...for hands, wrists, and thumbs, I'd try holistic or topical solutions.

Blue Emu is pricey.  It worked for me for a while.  Give it a try.  Walmart has their version of Blue Emu...kinda stinky but, it felt good.  The Stopain will work for over four hours an application. I found that since I started using it...I now use it less and less.  I hope it is helping.  I don't want to have surgery.

I take low dose aspirin every day, and that helps a lot with my various minor creaks and aches.

Pain has the function of limiting your movement so one can heal.
That said, it is good to relieve the pain so long as the relief isn't used/abused to go run marathons or something and damage yourself more. I know from experience yesterday, I over did it.

I'm dealing with it myself today, I hurt my back flipping over a floor tom last weekend. I bent over and move the drum out and flipped it to check the tuning on the lower head. I felt a twing in my lower back that has effect my left leg.

Funny I can sit ok and play drums no problem, but can't stand up straight or walk very well.
