I've found that people who are not drummers are more impressed with a big kit than a small one. They think that the guy that plays a whole bunch of drums and cymbals is a better player that the guy(or gal, sorry) that plays a small kit. You can't always judge a drummer by the size of his or her kit.
I am watching this Thomas Lang Creative Coordination & Advanced foot Technique DVD and he is playing 18 cymbals and 8 foot pedals and a very large kit. I am very impressed by his playing and the kit is impressive also.
If I was out in a club and saw this kit before the band took the stage I would call home and tell my wife that I wouldn't be home until late.

If I walk in and see someone with their drums set up to look dramatic at the expense of playability, I tend to be suspicious. Impossible tom angles, cymbals to the ceiling etc. Obviously, some genres demand large setups, which look more dramatic by nature, but when I walk into a bar to hear a top 40 cover band and the drummer has Bozzio's setup I tend to think to myself "here we go"...

Call me an ass.

Yikes. What did that sound like?
probably like something most drummers wouldn't like, but most song-writers would. i think it is a great idea. very original but i'm sure she simply banged out what was a traditional kick/snare pattern.

I tend to judge drummers too, more by the ergonomics of their setup than their brands, like many said.

Here's an exception: Dave Grohl when he played with Nirvana.

His setup, especially in the Smells Like Teen Spirit video ( http://www.youtube.com/v/kPQR-OsH0RQ), but even when playing live, is something most of us would scoff at before we actually heard him play.

I don't know if this makes any sense, but if I see a smaller kit I tend to think this drummer is probably average or better. If the kit is huge, I have a preconceived notion of "Well, he better be good, with all that stuff to hit!"

Hmmmm......Buddy Rich might have had a few things to say to you about that......

Probably Grin
But I meant I seem to demand more out of a guy with a 12-piece drumset with 14 cymbals. But on the other hand I seem to actually expect more from the guy with the "jazz" set-up.

On a similar note, how do you guys feel about a guy who sets up 10 or more cymbals, but they're all Sabian B8 or some other intro line. I always think to myself, "Sheesh, I would sell those 10 cheapos and buy 3 really nice ones."

That's just me. Back before I became a cymbal nerd I probably would have prefered quantity over quality, but I've totally nerded out the last year or so.

You can't always judge a drummer by the size of his or her kit.

A fact that holds true regardless of the kit size.
