Here is the new promo material for the Summer WFD Championships to be held July 27-30 at the Austin, Texas Convention Center.

http://www.extremesportdrumming.com/...07upcoming.htm

Competitors and spectators without NAMM passes are cool to attend, because Austin WFD occurs in the convention center lobby where a NAMM pass is not required. Usually for some reason the hands competition is rougher in the summer and the feet comp is monstrous at Winter NAMM. I haven't heard about any of the big guys competing on the double pedal, but that doesn't mean that won't be the case. I do know however that the hands comp is shaping up nicely with really strong guys/ladies.

If you think you have these kinds of skills and live close by you might want to consider competing as a walk on. A lot of times the people everyone thinks are going to win don't do as well, while many of the name drummers end up just observing after thinking they will compete. It wouldn't be the first time an unknown not favored to win has won. I'm certainly the example of that. Also remember that former champions can't compete for the prizes, and as always it's a lot of stuff.

Come drop by to see Johnny Rabb, Mike and me before you go into the exhibition hall. I'm looking forward to NAMM like always. Summer NAMM is cool to me because it's friendlier and smaller. Anaheim sometimes is pretty overwhelming.

See you there,

Matt

I just arrived today in Austin and summer NAMM starts tomorrow morning. It looks like a lot of fun for the world championships. I'm sunburned purple from high school marching band camp, so I'm glad I'll never have to compete for the world championships anymore. But I get to try for any world records I want, and tomorrow  I'll try to break the fastest hands endurance record, which is a 5 minute continuous single stroke run.

Then if I start feeling less sunburned I'll try to go after Mangini's 1126 traditional grip record. I currently stand at 1119 for 2nd in those rankings, but I just don't practice speed drumming all that much anymore. I love the WFD guys and always have a great time twice a year, and we all know that it's more than just speed. After all, the person I'm with here now helping the new guys is Johnny Rabb, and I think everyone knows he's more than all that stuff. But it's just a lot of fun to have a little home run hitting contest with good guys, while legends like Jim Chapin drop by to visit. It's a cool experience, and if you're in the neighborhood please drop by and say hi.

Id love to compete in the WFD but im to old. I dont think a 10 lb bag of sugar could even help me prior to taking the stage. The only award id take from a WFD contest is a 9th place trophy for effort Huh.

Oh I'm not so sure about that. The WFD for 2 years was Art Verdi, who is 60. But the whole event is certainly getting younger. Just today the new champion for fastest hands was another 16 year old who scored some of the fastest speeds of all time. He was a Canadian named Tom Grossett and he put on a really fantastic show. I don't compete in the contest anymore, but yesterday I was able to set the world hands endurance record. I was able to do 5132 singles for a 5 minute run so that was kinda cool. The whole thing is just a fun thing for bragging rights, nothing more. But everybody who gets in certainly can show off some extroidinary technical skills, and there are a lot of stars around watching, you go to NAMM, see the shows etc. So its a great experience for a young guy like me who's still on the learning curve.
