Can anyone tell me about their experience with DW – specifically your experience selecting and ordering drums?  Did you order through a drum or music shop?  How long did it take for the drums to arrive?

Im thinking about pulling the trigger on my dream kit in green glass.

I ordered mine around 1990 or so.  I ordered through a once reputable but now now-defunct drum shop in Chicago.  The shop went out of business before my drums were ready - long, ugly story.  PM me and I'll supply details if you like.  Note - the problem was with the particular drum shop - not DW.  In fact DW was extremely helpful to me through all that.

I selected the drums, sizes, hardware, and finish ala carte.  I was told it might take close to a year to get them.  I received then drums a little sooner than that - about nine months later.  Best drums I've ever played. . .  and this is coming from a guy whose paycheck for seven years was signed by William F Ludwig Jr., and who later served as a Slingerland endorser.   Smiley

They really are outstanding drums, hardware and service.  Go for it.

Ugh. I knew it would take months -- not weeks -- but that's a long wait.  I'm not ordering anything complex -- just a bass, rack tom, floor tom, and snare (I'm already set up with DW hardware with my existing PDP kit), but I'm sure I'll be in for a long wait anyway.

Thanks for the info!

Remember I ordered mine back in 1990.  Things might be different now.  Call a dealer.  Drop DW Customer Service a line.  See if you can get a better sense of the lead time.

I was looking through their site the other day just for kicks (no pun intended) and it seems like they have a ton of options, which is great. I'm thinking of ordering my next kit from them, but I'm a long way off from doing that so who knows.

Do you think they could make a color that isn't on their list if I give them a picture of a kit I like? Those exotic finishes are really nice too...god there are too many choices.

To this day there is just something about those round lugs that i really dig and im a fan of the G.M.S. Premier stretch lug design. D.W.'s got some classy finishes. When i win the lottery (and i AM tonight) im gettin a kit. Theres one other kit im thinking real hard about pushing the buy it now but im not tellin ya what kit, its kind of a top secret.
