I am so excited. After shattering my left elbow playing soccer on June 23rd, I can finally start playing drums again. I am only about halfway through my physical therapy and not fully healed yet, but started strength training (2-5 lbs) last week. Today the doctor gave me the green light to work "hard" on my PT.
I plan on using my e-drums using "Stick Control" or some other hand stuff I have.
Other than starting out easy, has anyone any words of wisdom? Thanks.
PS: Knowing that there were Cafe members (including my brother) with permanent disabilities playing and making music was a great inspiration to me back on June 23rd. Without them I would probably have been depressed and feeling sorry for myself. Thanks for the attitude adjustment.

Hi rca, I know this news makes you happy. I had knee surgery on my kick drum knee a few years ago and the doctor told me that any low level excersise is good. He basically told me to do what ever I wanted to do as long as it didn't cause discomfort. He incouraged me to play drums. I can honestly say that drumming was good theropy. I am not sure that I even started off slow. My band was waiting for me to get better so when he said GO, I did. Just remember, if it hurts, don't do it. I would keep your doctor in the loop on your drumming. Make sure he say's it is OK. Good Luck. Nutty

Recovering from an auto accident I'm in the same boat. Last night I went and sat in with my old band for a few songs. The leader told me that I played the tunes with the right beat and tempo, but during a long song I would slow down a tad and didn't realize it. Because I have to wear a plastic leg and foot brace it didn't allow me to use my "toe" for feel and kick as I did before the injury. It made me tired during a set. Since I use the plastic piece for walking I probably could remove it while playing, then put it back on after a gig. I need to practice on a set for long times and simulate a 4 hour gig. When I'm back up to that level of playing again I could return with my old band. So over the next month I've got to practice and return to my old self. That requires both work and desire. But my mind is up to it, now I need to get my leg up to it. Looking forward to the fun again. Just like the old days, I'm just 40 years older with a leg & foot brace. I know I can still do it, people have told me so....

You do it man, Kick some &^%$ Chip. There are a few folks here recovering from stuff. Louis should be back into it soon and Mr. A hasn't reported for a long time about his frozen shoulder? I hope your elbow gets better rca. I am praying for good health to all of you guy's . Nutty

Elbow, limbs and spine and everything? Imagine, just a salivary gland was removed from my neck this summer, and I thought I was OK two weeks after the operation (I was released from hospital after four days) and I did a gig with my band (with a little piece of plaster on my neck still), but the wound broke, it started to bleed, and I haven't recovered ever since. So be careful, our body is a dangerous thing, quite a drawback in our career.

Played a little yesterday. I was happy to see that the arm still works. It is real slow and feels fat fingered, but it works. Reminds me of a line from Young Frankenstein: "IT'S ALIVE!"

BTW, I know a very good and efficient American chiropractor who helped me a lot with my spine problems (years ago, doctors wanted to operate on me, but this guy put me OK in a few months without any operation or hospital treatment), he could do you good, too, for sure - he's from the US, still I can't recommend him, because he lives in Budapest; that's how I could meet him. Funny, isn't it.
