Alright, I've been playing drums for about 2 and a half years.(two of those years I didn't practice very much at all...). I've been looking at my style and I realized that for some reason I can't keep in time very well and my technique is very very sloppy. I think I need to relearn my technique and start everything slow but get it smooth. I'm also working on my hand technique. I'm trying to learn to play with the fingers.
Any advice on this subject?

1)  There's no substitute for practice, which I'm guessing you already know.  Wink

2)  Taking lessons from a good teacher is highly recommended, if you're not doing so already.

3)  Go buy Billy Ward's "Big Time" instructional DVD.

4)  If you don't have one already, get a metronome or drum machine.  It doesn't need to be big, fancy, or expensive - one can get plenty of mileage out of a little $25 metronome.

Thanks for the reply James.

Yes, I realize that you need to practice practice practice.

I'm taking lessons from a great teacher. I just started again a couple weeks ago

And I've got a really small metrenome that I can't hear at all over the sound of drumming.

Get an electronic metronome or drum machine that you can use headphones with.
Then add isolation headphones like Vic Firth's.

At that point, you'll be able to comfortably, safely hear some reference while you're playing.  Logs lots of time with that.

If you're not already doing this, get yourself set up where you can play along to MP3s or CD's.  I find some students lose track of actually playing along to complete songs and wind up only playing little segments while practicing.  There's no substitute for playing along to complete songs start to finish and locking in with the groove of the song.  Logs lots of time with that.

Sounds like you are off to a good "restart".  Don't worry, a lot of us have started - and in some cases, started off badly.  A mid course correction is a good thing!  Good luck with it.

Great point. If you want to eventually play SONGS, you got to work on a beginning, a middle (with changes) and an end.

If you have the passion about drums to just come here and tell everyone that you need to STOP! and try again, it's a very good start.

All has been said above, but the most important is to never, EVER! lose the fun you have in front of your drums. NEVER!

A 5 rythm polyrythm is hard to master,
But creating one needs a lot more passion.

Click the Amazon link through Drummer Cafe and purchase Jojo Mayer's Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer DVD.  If you regret this purchase, I will eat a drumtsick.
