This Saturday Sue Orfield will be sitting in with my funk band.

She's an awesome, well-schooled sax player,
check out http://www.sueorfield.com/.

By the looks of it, maybe I should say that we're sitting in with her.

We're all excited, but I'm a little nervous.  I'm not completely green, but does anybody have any advice about playing with someone much more seasoned than them?  Play tasteful, I know that, but anything else?

I guess the only thing I could offer is - whatever prep can be done, do it.  Smiley
Is it an improv thing, or is there a strict setlist and arrangements?

Whatever you can practice - practice it alot.  Smiley

Did that help?    Smiley

[I'll echo a recent lament from another post:
at this point, I'd be happy to be playing with Anybody.
I'm in a band, but we so far have a stellar 2 2008 gigs on the books.
As for open mics, there's One in the area that is a match.
So, it looks like I'm going to have a Very Slow climb back into gigging
on drums unless something else drops in my lap soon.]

Thanks.

It's mostly "set-list" stuff, but with the plan being we'll make the solo sections longer if she's really wailing.  The problem is (among a few) that we never got to actually practice with her--the band would simply play rythmn during her solo spots in rehearsal.

That happens with our keyboard player, too--he's much more seasoned than the rest of us.  The ages in the group range from 20 to 30, with me being the "old guy", while the keyboard guy is 50-ish.

As far as Sue's age--I'm not so dumb as to guess at a woman's age.  Wink

Should be fun, though.  Our two guitar players are dressing as the Blues Brothers (it's a Halloween weekend show).  Dressing as the "drummer for the Blues Brothers" shouldn't be too hard, since I don't recall ever seeing him in costume.

Maybe not the most original costume for a funk and blues band to wear, but it's all in fun!

It turned out pretty awesome, I must say.

There was a great turn-out, and since it was a costume-party atmosphere, everybody was having a good time.  The band and I were happy for the turn-out, since we didn't want our guest to play to an empty room.

It was one of the best, most-fun shows of my life!
