Hi,
Does anyone have an opinion on this book? I'm looking around for a book/CD combo to give to my 11 year-old son for Christmas. He had a year of lessons, but we had to cut back. He still plays daily experimenting to come up with new licks and he spends a lot of time on another drumming forum (sorry!). I wanted to get him something to help him build his repetoire.

I thought this might be an inexpensive option that I think he'd actually use. Stick Control has been a waste of money so far. This book looks like a new release.

Thanks

I can't help with an opinion on the Schroedl book, but I'm curious if you know why your son doesn't like/use Stick Control? Is it to "dry", or something to that effect?

If you search the forum, there have been a number of threads on creative uses of Stick Control. Maybe there are some ideas in there that your son could get some mileage out of - and help you get your money's worth.

Haven't used that particular book.  This one is pretty good - similar to the book you mention.  Comes with a CD that demonstrates the playing.

I'm not sure what level your son is at, but I'd recommend these two
at both ends of the spectrum:

Basic end of the spectrum, but useful and approachable:
One of Dawn Richardson's books

Starts at basic end of the spectrum, ends at challenging:
Tommy Igoe's Grooves book/CD/DVD.

Another alternative to having to discontinue his lessons is to go to the local university and see if you can get one of the upper classmen to give him lessons. Check with the department head and he/she would probably know who is giving "budget" lessons. That's what I did in 1977 and I ended up with one of the best teachers in my city for half of what regular lessons cost.

Igoe's DVD is also a great bet.
