I came across the term "southside shuffle" this last couple of weeks. I know all kinds of shuffles... but what is this one?  Any ideas?

That's a new one on me...  I've heard East/West side shuffles, Texas Shuffles -- never Southside shuffle...  if I had to guess I'd say it might refer to a 'country' shuffle (Walkin' after Midnight -- not a great example, but the only one that comes to mind right now).

I'd be interested to hear what it actually is??

What might help is to post a audio clip of what someone is calling a Southside Shuffle. This would help determine if there is another name for it ... which I'm positive there is.

This is the only Southside Shuffle I know about, but then again I don't know much.

OK, I have more information. Smiley

Turns out, a bass playing friend of mine heard me playing "Inner City Blues" by Marvin Gaye at a gig a week or two ago. I play a "shuffled" version of a boogaloo beat.

So, mystery solved.

"duh-duh-DAH-duh-DAH-duh-DAH-duh-DAH", to be perfectly simple.

The chorus of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by that one band is a heavy-music-type example.  Refer to James Brown for the authentic version.

It was used way too much in the early 1990s, and through this period by pop music stragglers and CCM.  It's musically appropriate at times, but I have a personal bias against it for a variety of reasons beyond the scope of this thread.

Joe is right... it was introduced (in a wide-spread way) in the 60's. I am also no fan of the beat. Like most "beats," however, it can be the basis for some other cool stuff.

So, boogaloo begats "southside shuffle."

Ain't music cool!

We've discussed the Boogaloo here on several occasions.

There's different types of Boogaloos as well (ie. Electric Boogaloo, Latin Boogaloo).
